Looks like we are finally going to be able to make it to San Diego for the races. I was going to reserve our RV spot today, but I have a few questions. Are there hook up's for any RV's? I ask b/c I think I have a hole in my water holding tank, and am hoping they have at least water hook ups if not water and electricity. Also, which would be the best place to camp and be able to be close to the water and action. It would be really awesome to be able to sit on top of the trailer w/ the kids and see a lot of the action. Is anyone else going for the weekend? I hope we can hook up w/ some of y'all and have a few silver bullets. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance...

Wife and I are flying down on the Thursday before, leaving the boat at home. Thought about volunteering as a course patrol boat, but since this will be our first trip for this event, we did not want to get tied down in a certain area. Looks to be a great event with so many different types of boat classes all in the same general area. For anyone else interested you can check out the web site for the event at www.thunderboatregatta.com

I did look @ the site. It has prices w/ tickets, but no mention of weather or not there are hook ups. Having never been down for it before, i don't know weather i need the trailer filled up or not, and where the bast place to camp is. Also, w/ the tickets included in the prices, does that allow entry to everything, or just 1 partucular division? I will have to stop by and see everyone, it'll be a fun weekend...

There is bitchen RV parks on or near Mission Bay that offer full hookups.
The best way to get around down there is beach cruiser bikes
The traffic can be unbearable at times down there.
I look forward to the cooler weather and the nice scenary
Hope the crosswinds are mellow,as i have a hard time keeping my junk in my own lane:eek:

No hookups unless you are at Campland. You'll be in a big bayside parking lot. Bring beachcruisers or bikes for sure. BBQ mandatory. :D

How about on the water? Is it boat friendly, and can you get close enough from the water to see anything?

The place my folks stayed at a couple of years ago was next to CAMPLAND AND was alot more reasonably priced with full hookups
It used to be an old mobile home park
It was real clean with a rec room and nice showers
Cant remember the full name,it was something Harbor?

Definately no hook ups. Best place to watch the Unlimiteds is Fiesta island. It can be quite the party over there. If you like Dragboats you need to be on Crown point.
Ski beach is where the manufacturers midway is as well as the pit for the unlimiteds, champboats and Flatbottom sprintboats SS & K classes. You can see the unlimiteds good from ski beach just not as good as Fiesta island.
Bicycles are a must and its usually cool and overcast mornings and hot and sunny in the afternoon.
Have fun!

I called Campland today, they only had rv spots available, & she said the hook ups would be on the wrong side for me. That is no big deal though, and if we can't find anything else, i will go for it. I got the # for Mission Bay RV today & plan on calling tomorrow to check their availibility. Online it say's there isn't any availibility for what we want. I'll give the # you put up a call as well (thanks) tomorrow. Where are they located from the race courses? I'm trying to stick as close as possible, but understand I may have to be a bit away beings we are starting this planning so late. I am looking forward to a kick ass weekend. My boys love boating, and the drags, so I'm imagining they'll love seeing all the different boat races as well.

We had some peeps tell us that last year, supposably they were security:confused: it wasnt enforced and we even seen Harleys motor right up to the fence in front of the course and parked there most of the day
We had our EZ up right on the grassy area in front and rode are bikes to and from our pit on both days

You can rent a spot right on the beach on Crown Point. But there is no hookups. It is just a park at the beach. But there are campgrounds around there.

We are going on friday....be my first time.
Question. If I want to watch the drags and the circles / unlimited. Do they have access from crown point to fiesta island to ski beach. Looking at google looks as though you can only get to these places by boat or by driving all the way around.

TAF (my brother) and I will be there. The shuttle is extremely sloooow, if you have bikes bring them, it's easier to get around. A friend of mine camped over on the other side last year and I remember it taking her an hour and a half to get over to me in the pits. I know it says no bikes allowed but there sure were a lot last year. who knows maybe the shuttle is faster this year.....

Wife and I were in San Diego for four days last weekend, the Thunderfest was our reason for going. Spent Friday and Sunday at the races. mainly at Crown Point, longing for some good dragboat action. While the concept of having some many different types of boats racing on the same weekend was very appealing, in reality the drag boats get the short end of the stick in my opinion. Too little time devoted to them, too many racers parking in the middle of the course, waiting for the waves to dissipate from other classes, and so on made for a long and boring day. Also the turnout of real ***boats was much less than I had expected. Not to mention the fact that all the rules they had layed out were not enforced, got my ankle clipped by some kid on a BMX bike going like crazy right in front of the IHBA/Lucas trailer. Eazy-ups lined the entire shore on Thursday when we drove by to become familiar with the area, and once I was forced to move due to constant smoke in my face from rude people, including officals who were ignoring the no smoking ban.
All in all I enjoyed touring the attack aircraft carrier Midway, and seeing Sea World again much more than the BOREFEST.
Will be going to Firebird in November to make up for what I missed last weekend, next year I will know better.
And as a suggestion to help things along, the planners should have a couple of wave runners standing by to tow broke boats off the course, rather than using the crash boats for that purpose. And if you are going to post rules, then enforce them.

Wow, I thought I might be the only person thinking this way. A buddy and I were on my boat on Sunday sitting at the start of the drags. I can't tell ya, how bored we were just waiting for a race. WAAAYYYY too much down time between runs. It seemed that even when there were boats lined up it still took 10minutes to do the next run. The organisers need to attend an NHRA event to see how they keep the action going.
BTW, what's with the Sea Doos racing?

In a racers opinoun,i love the weather and scenery in SD
dragracing on the same body of water simultaneusly with offshore and unlimited boats is a joke for sure, they dont even wait half the time for our slow ten second class
Some of my runs were so "white Knuckle"bouncing over the rollers i thought the boat would hook and throw me out:sqeyes:
They dont have any paved boatramps at Crown point so that really makes the show slow and limits the amount of entries
Amen on the smoking,i cant wait till all public places including beaches, hotels and casinos are completly smokefree
Come by our pit in Firebird and say hey

It was great to talk to old friends, and meet some new ones. Wish we could have met some more folks. Ah well. I'm not sure we'll be back for the boat races there. Don't get me wrong, it was a great trip, but everything was so spread out it made life a little difficult when your hauling around a 3 and 5 y/o in a Radio Flyer wagon. They loved the racing, but they even wished there was more action on the drag track. It really looked like the party was there in the camp sites all weekend. I can't believe how much those folks put into their sites. If I do it again, it'll definetly be an adult only weekend, and we'll be staying closer to the track. Missoin Bay Rv was nice, and we could hear all that was going on on the big course, and w/ just a short walk, we could see it as well. The kids enjoyed it. We also watchedhe fireworks on Sat night from there.
The trip home went really well until we gt to Stockton on I5. The alternator went out in the truck. Our volt gague started fluxuating, but always came back up to 14, but once we got onto Hwy 12, it went to 12 and didn't recover. By then it was too late and I had to try to make it home. Well she didn't, and we died in the middle of nowhere. Had to get towed home. What started as looking like we were going to make really good time time on our 500 mile journey turned out to be a long day to say the least. I hope everyone else made it home ok. I hope to see some new faces as well as catch up w/ some of y'all @ Red Bluff next May...

It was much better being able to just drive back in forth from pit to pit. That way we always stayed busy and saw lots of racing. Did you guys ever make it over to the other pits?

Thanks for the sympath. It wasn't a big deal, just stressful @ the time. We made it to the other pits on Sat, actually we had just got back from there when we saw you on sat, but didn't go on Sunday. After we left you, we just went back to the sandy beach just beyond the finish line so the boys could play. We watched all of the finals from there. It was good to see you 3 out there. The boys just worship Tony. They think he is so awesome. I'm sure we'll be back to the races someday, just after the boys get older, but we'll keep going to Red Bluff & Chowchilla. I personally enjoy the drags more than those others they had going there. Anyway, I hope you had a good trip home. We'll see you next year. Maybe I can even talk the wife into hitting Phoenix next spring...
