Man drowns after jumping off dock
Sunday, August 26, 2007 10:42 PM MST
Staff reports
HAVASU LANDING — Lake Havasu has taken another life.
An adult man drowned just after noon Sunday after he reportedly jumped off the courtesy docks on the Chemehuevi Tribal Reservation.
Sunday’s drowning was the third on Lake Havasu and the fifth on the Colorado River so far this year.
Jodi Miller, spokesperson the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office, said the man was standing on the dock, talking to others on a boat when the boat started to drift away from the dock.
“Witnesses said he was talking to people on the other boat and holding the boat. He pushed out and then he was trying to pull it back, then he jumped in the water,” Miller said.
Witnesses reported seeing the man take one deep breath then go underneath the dock. When he didn’t resurface they called for emergency assistance.
“He was found at 1525 (3:25 p.m.) by two members of the SBCSO Marine Enforcement Unit. The area where the body was recovered was very, very grassy,” Miller said.
The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin. Investigation to determine if alcohol was a factor in the incident is ongoing.

Maybe he got a cramp.. thats happened to me a few times and scared to shiit outta me. Curiosity has me to think...why did nobody jump in to help him asap? The bottom can be really mushy around docks too..In topac I was knee deep in that crap with my head barely above water.

Does anyone know what the memorial is for under the Condo's next to the Agave ? A few flowers, some smokes, a ball, a frisbee ? Some candles ? Odd location but someone must have died there or a dog maybe ? Couldn't figure it out.

This is going to sound stupid but......... I was on the phone with my brother and he mentioned that his wife was on the phone because her sisters friend drowned at the river over the weekend. I asked if he fell off the docks at Havasu Landing and he asked her and she said yeah. Don't know the story or if he was drunk or cramp or whatever at this point. If I find anything out and am allowed to say then I will post it up.

Sad. Had someone tell me about a senseless, tragic death on Mohave almost 2 wks. ago. Said a girl (in her 20s) on a waverunner, ran over her mother who was riding on a waverunner in front of her. Evidently, daughter was riding very close behind, hit wakes, launched her and ended up running up on her Mother & Father on the waverunner in front. Mom died, Father survived. Girl must be devastated. :( :(
Gotta have some sort of training or license to operate watercraft. Anybody and everybody shouldn't be able to just get on and go without any knowledge or training.

Here is some updated info on this sad story. This is from e-press, but in the Today's News Herald today it stated that his friends indicated that he had been drinking - of course. This is just a weird story. RIP Michael Conley
:(
Drowning Victim ID’d
HAVASU LANDING, AZ - A young man from Huntington Beach, California drowned Sunday afternoon, following an incident at Havasu Landing. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office says he went under the water and never surfaced on the California side of Lake Havasu.
Spokeswoman Jodi Miller said Michael Conley, 25, drowned after diving into the water from the boat dock at Havasu Landing. Miller said friends encouraged Conley to climb into a nearby boat. While talking to some people on the other boat, he was holding onto his boat and was attempting to pull it back. Conley took a deep breath and swam under the dock. He never came back up. Thick grass covered the area under the dock and may have contributed to the accident. He was a 2000 graduate of Ocean View High in Huntington Beach.
Also, in a touch of irony, a 23-year-old body surfer, James Rutherford, was in Huntington Beach and drowned in the ocean there on Sunday.

Time for a change, what does a kid diving off of a dock and drowning have to do with boating accidents, drunks ,etc etc. This shit is so over played has been going on for years and will continue for years to come.Shit now they even blame a person getting ran over by a car as a havsu death that happens only there happens daily where i live no one gives a shit.Yes there has been some horrific accidents this year and some very sad deaths but come on getting ran over by a drunk and people drowing are two way different things.I hear of kids drowning all the time in pools sad as hell but what do we do fill all pools with sand.

NO, we take steps to help prevent things like this from happining. Any death is a tragity, and most deaths and injuries dealing with the water can be prevented!!!!!!!! And We as the boating community need to take steps to help bring on these changes.
From using a designated driver to swiming lessions for your kids or even taking a CPR class, any effort to lower the ammount of deaths on the river.
Im sorry, the excuse that it has always happed and will continue to happen is unaccaptable. Ignoring the problem is never the solution.

I guess because he was holding a boat at the time he went in. I know people die everyday in all kinds of horrific accidents. This story is just something us boaters would have in common, I'm sure we have all held a boat at a dock that started to drift away. I just find the circumstances around his drowning odd...sounds like he had a chance to climb onto another boat, but went under the dock.
