Nothing pretty like a schematic, but the sender is a variable resistor, and the gauge reads that resistance, that is all.
The gauge gets +12 and a ground, and the sender wire goes to the sending unit in the tank. In a boat, there isn't a chassis ground so to speak, so an additional wire needs to be run from the tank itself (you can use one of the outside bolts of the sending unit) back to the ground on the guage (or a ground that connects to it). If you want a light, then the light goes to your gauge lights.
The wire grounding the tank it the one that messes everyone up, in a car it is automatically grounded, so no one realizes it is needed.
