HavasuÂ’s Busy Weekend
LAKE HAVASU CITY, AZ - Lake Havasu City Police and Fire Departments report a relatively mild 2007 Labor Day holiday weekend, despite a slight increase in the total number of arrests and calls for service. Police responded to 1,215 calls during the long weekend, which officially began at 12:01am Friday and ended at midnight Monday. (The number of calls increased from 1,128 during the same period in 2006.)
The majority of the activity centered on the area known as the Bridgewater Channel, London Bridge Beach, Rotary Community Park and the English Village. Police arrested 161 adults and 8 juveniles, many for alcohol-related offenses, primarily underage possession/consumption. Police noted that the average blood alcohol concentration for those arrested for alcohol offenses was .25%. (There was even one young female passed out on the sidewalk with a .27% BAC.) There were a total of 9 DUI offenses and 60 were charged with underage possession/consumption of liquor. Six men and three females were also arrested under the offensive Behavior code. (Police Chief Dan Doyle said three others - all female - were almost arrested for that offense, but were instead charged with disorderly conduct.)
Boat traffic was restricted only twice during the weekend due to elevated carbon monoxide levels. The Bridgewater Channel was closed for about 30 minutes - at 7pm Saturday - and again on Sunday for about ten minutes at 4:50pm. There were no boating related deaths or serious injuries reported in the city over the holiday weekend. However, a Valley Village, California man, identified as Marc Hart, drowned in Steamboat Cove, a popular spot for boats south of the City.
Detectives are also continuing to investigate the Sunday murder of William Wright, 73. He was shot multiple times and his wife Candace Wright has been charged with the crime. Doyle said the gun has still not been found.
The Lake Havasu City Fire Department also reported 106 total calls for service, a 21% increase from the 87 listed last year. The majority of those (69) were for emergency medical incidents, including nine for fire, six rescues and four vehicle accidents.

Today's News Herald -
66 percent arrested during the weekend were Californians
By TONY RAAP

Many who came to town on vacation this past weekend left on probation.
The holidayÂ’s crime statistics, released Tuesday by the cityÂ’s Police Department, show that two-thirds of the people arrested during Labor Day weekend were from California.
In all, 169 people were arrested this past weekend, 11 more than last year. Of that, 112, or 66 percent, were from the sunshine state.
“That does appear to be normal and right in line with previous holidays,” police Lt. Rich Sloma said.
The majority of arrests, 60, were for underage possession/consumption of alcohol. Disorderly conduct, 25, and drinking in public, 10, rounded out the top three categories.
Nine people were charged with offensive conduct, a city ordinance aimed at preventing unruly behavior before it becomes a more serious crime.
The ordinance was in effect for the 2006 Labor Day weekend, but this was the first year it had been enforced for the entire summer, giving visitors an increased awareness, Sloma said.
Nine people also were arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, a drop from past years, police Chief Dan Doyle said.
“That’s a little bit low for a holiday weekend, but there was a lot of awareness. There was a DUI task force going on. Hopefully, people are getting the idea,” he said.
Police are seeing the same thing with OUI arrests, noting that the number of OUI arrests in the Channel is “down significantly” compared to last year, Doyle said.
“We’re attributing that to the emphasis we placed on it the last boating season. We’re seeing more designated drivers, so I think the increased awareness is helping,” he said.
The cityÂ’s Fire Department also had a busy holiday. Firefighters this past weekend responded to 106 emergencies, up from 87 last year.
The majority of those, 78, were medical calls. Firefighers also responded to nine fire-related calls and four vehicle accidents.
“Even though the total number of emergency incidents increased from last year’s totals, we were fortunate enough to have a fairly safe weekend,” fire Chief Dennis Mueller said.

I think the sunshine state is Florida. Ca is the The Golden State.

It seems odd that someone would actually take time out of their day to write an article on 66% of the arrests being residents of California.... Seemed as how tourism is the main support for Havasu, it would seem a little too obvious that the people are coming from California. Many (not all) locals are either retired and dont boat on holiday weekends, or dont have the income in order to boat, due to the city being a tourist based town and not having many "white collar" opportunities there. Many Nevada residents it seems would stay up on their lakes, especially since they are soooo freekin big compared to Havasu. Californian's dont have a lake the size of Havasu near by (except the guys running ocean boats), so it only makes sense that most of the people in Havasu would be from California.
That journalist is a jacka$$... (hello, my name is Mr. Obvious, let me write a report to make California tourists look bad)

It's interesting that the print version of the paper correctly identifies it as the 'Golden' state. I copied this text from their website.

We saw alot of people getting rolled in the channel friday afternoon. More than a couple people cuffed and buckled in the back of a golf cart.
There were a ton of sherrif boats heading out from there cove. We were told there was gonna be something like 42 boats on the water.:)

Did anyone see the guy late Sunday afternoon in the channel with the black cowboy hat? There was like 4 cops around him telling him to leave and then he threw his hat at the cops and ran. They caught him, but I was curious to see what happened, IÂ’m sure he was just being a drunk jackass.

I question that figure. If the AVERAGE was .25%, then one drunk chick at .27% isn't a real big deal.
.15% average I could believe. But .25%? I call BS.

How many of the 60 charged with underage possession/consumption of liquor were locals?

CityGuy

Good catch Alan. The .25% was the average of three men that were arrested under the offensive conduct ordinance (urinating in public), not the average for all alcohol-related arrests, as stated in the paper.
Roostwear - Of the 60 arrests for underage possession/consumption:
55 adults (18-20)
5 juveniles
52 California
2 locals
2 other AZ
4 elsewhere

Hey City guy,
I was told a guy I know was arrested for "criminal littering" Something to do with having a glass bottle outside the boat in the channel. He got booked and because his buddie's did'nt post bail in two hours, he got shipped to Kingman. This was Sun, he got released Tues. afternoon.
Any truth to this criminal littering charge? Or only half the story?
Thanks.

I located a report that indicates on Sunday at about 5:20pm, a 36-year old man was arrested for criminal littering in the Channel. According to the report, he was holding a glass bottle while standing in the water and submerged the bottle allowing it to sink to the bottom when he was approached by the officer. He was arrested and charged with criminal littering after refusing to retrieve the bottle as instructed by the officer.
Those are all the facts I have, but it's quite possible he spent two days in Kingman if he pleaded guilty and was unable to post bond after his initial hearing before the LHC Magistrate, which was likely sometime after 7pm the night he was arrested.
That's usually how it goes if you're guilty. Sentence: two days in jail, 12 moths unsupervised probation, $500 fine. If you can pay your fine and post bond right now, the jail time is suspended and you can go. That's just a typical scenario. Your mileage may vary.

Nope, not me. I dont drink and drive, and I tend to be a fairly peacefull guy. However, there are so many locals that cant stand the tourists coming into town, so, to me it sounds as if this journalist is writing an article for the locals in order to place blame on CA (before people get in about half the lake being in CA "captain dan") I am not refering to the 200 people that live on the California side of the lake. I am refering to the 20-30k that come from the Metropolitain area's of So Cal, didnt know I would have to be so specific. Thought it would have been aparent that by my statement and the obvious numbers of people coming from socal that I was talking about the metro area.

The funniest thing we say all weekend.
The PD charged down the beach on there cart and shouted to the girls next to us "Pull up your pants now, your crack is showing!!!!"
After they drove off the girl respondes to me "Was my ass really out?I know I've got a big butt,I can't tell if it's out or not?"
I offered some crack spackle,she wasn't interested:)

Thanks City Guy,
First off, I have'nt talked to the guilty guy (civillian who owns his own business/ owns a big cat like most here on this site), but that is pretty much the story I heard.
Aside from that, the guy is telling friends that the same cop approached him on Sat. in the same general area and was about to write him a ticket. The "civi" told him he was picking up a discarded bottle so the cop let it pass.
On to Sunday, same cop, same civi, same situation. I can't say if I was that cop, seeing the same guy in the same scenario, I'd think "BS" to "picking up trash. Coincedence? Possibly. The civi learned a hard lesson if, indeed, he was just picking up trash. Probably picking up after his "friends"
I've known him for five years and have'nt seen him toss trash at the river or Glamis, but, I've also been a cop long enough NOT to be surprised by ANYONE's behavior.
Either way, I totally understand the seriousness of injuries due to glass in public places and realize the enforcement.
The crappy part for the civi was his friends. They were told to PHONE in his credit card to the jail and they simply did not. (cops hooked him up/did'nt allow anyone to fetch his wallet from the boat) He then got shipped off to Kingman for 48 hours.
The hardest lesson learned for this guy is to pick your friends WISELY. They had the common courtesy to drive his truck/boat to Kingman and drop it off for him Monday before renting a car in Havi and driving home. He paid for their hotel room/they rode in his boat......SUCKER/LOL

I was sitting over by the Agave on Fri. when I see this guy carrying a ice chest. He starts emptying the ice chest into the trash can when a Corona bottle falls out and breaks. Dumb a$$ steps on a piece of glass and starts bleeding. His buddy comes over and pulls out the piece and he gets back in the boat. Right then the F.D. guys in there golf cart roll by and I ask if they have a broom. They didn't, but put on there gloves and picked up the glass. The guys in the boat got out of there fast. I told the fireman what a nice way to start the labor day weekend.

I wonder what the point is when they point out that a lake, that borders both AZ and CA, has arrests in the only main town on the lake that happens to be in AZ? What is the population of CA vs. AZ (37 million vs. 6 million)? If you added AZ to CA's population, CA would make up 84% of 43 million. So, infact, as a per capita of each state, Arizonians are the bad actors - as a statistic, Arizonians are almost 400% worst than Californians. :D

Guess you're perfect since you drug hoses around for awhile. Sorry everyone else is so terrible. Guess this guy should'nt have the right to boat either.
HMMM, littering vs. an OUI? I guess it could be construed the same in the morals court.
I'll remember to step out of your way if you come by with your walker, will I be able to know it's you by the fire stickers all over the walker?, or by your tee shirt/LOL
