Can anyone tell me what a standoff box (between the engine and the drive) is for, and how it works?

Not enough information!
What drive do you have?
There are drive systems that use a trans between the engine and drive for F-N-R. That's what it sounds like your talking about with having to guess what your working with.

A standoff box mounts the drive (and pivot point) farther back from the transom to give positive trim more leverage to carry the nose.
Less positive trim needed = more forward thrust
However, it also makes your x-dimension deeper...so you'll probably need to raise the engine or put a shorty on to maximize the benefits.
