Almost looks like a wolf spider in those pics. How big is it? put a quarter or something next to it if possible.
Do they have wolf spiders in CT?

Isn't that a common North American Boat spider (yes they are occasionally seen in Canada).
Bug spray in your boat before winter, and you will not have those spiders next year.:D

I googled a wolf spider and that's not it. They don't have pinchers on the end of their legs like that one does.

Yeah, them claw deals are kind of creepy. I have found a couple dead wolf spiders that big at times (in my garage) and they do look like the top of that one when they get big. Unless I got the same damned mystery spider here in Cali.
I'd ask a neighbor.
Tommy
PS- Let us know if you find out?

The claws are found on the orb spiders for grasping onto the web.

Many moons ago I worked in a pet store, and we sold a few of the "camel spiders" as "wind scorpions". If I remember correctly, they're related to spiders and scorpions, but they arent really either. No venom, but a nasty bite, aggressive, and when they get to running they are so fast you can't keep up. (Rumor had it the native folks said they "run like the wind", and the name stuck). I found one in my garage here in Norco about a year ago that was about 1.5" long.
As for the ugly-ass clawed spider from CT, I have no idea what that is, but they're all equals with a can of RAID in my hand.

I can say with 90% or so certianty that is not an orb weaver. I have orb weavers all over my ranch. BIG ones! Saw one last year that I thought was a humming bird caught in a web. Almost 3" long.
I have never seen one with legs that full. Although I have seen ones with very similar coloring, almost identicle.
I dont kill them unless they are close to walkways or by the house or shop. They supposedly eat an enormous amount of insects.
