I'm replacing my good ole v/p 280 with a late model SX, I'll be getting the transom re-glassed next week. I need an idea of where to cut the new holes. I've been told the higher the drive, the faster the boat.... I don't wanna screw this up.... little help...

put where it belongs, cavitation plate 1/2 above the bottom and prop it for best performance. cant go wrong no blow out, cavitation, no bow bounce and no blowing the water off the prop getting on plane.......

Most new boats are now built with a higher X height.
I would go up at least 1 to 2 inches.
You can always space it back down if needed.
