This winter i'm going to build a bigger motor for the boat. I'm currently running a blown 468. So I started talking to some engine shops, The first guy told me that the 632 short block with a 14 71 is the best way to go. Then I call another guy that told me that same short block would be a bad idea. So which guy doesnt know what he's talking about. Any other ideas of what I can use to make about 1100hp, I already have 345 dart pro 1's, intercooler, isky roller cam with a 727 lift. I am going to buy a bigger blower, maybe a 14 71?

A 632 and a 14-71 better make WAY more than 1100.....!! We run a 632 in the dragster and it makes 1350 N/A on gas. Why not go with a 540 and a 10-71 with a super chiller? That should do the trick just fine.

well, I figured for the same $ I can make more power if I feel like it. or is a 540 a better way of going?

I know a few guys running 572's with 12-71 blowers in their HTM's both are making well over 1000 HP. Both are turn key type boats for the entire season.

Depending on the engine block you use to build the 632, there might not be enough material left in the sleeve/bore to overbore it again if something goes wrong and the cylinder walls become damaged.
you might consider building a combo with a smaller bore diameter...

A 632 is 4.600 bore x 4.75 stroke. Pistons are big $$ and you can only go to 4.625 after that. Balancing is big $$. The stoke is so big that the rods will probably hit the cam unless you run a reduced base circle roller cam, big $$ and custom ground.
All this is overkill for anything short of all out drag race. A 540 or 572 with a 10 or 12-71 is plenty enough to destroy your driveline...

A 540 with an F2 Procharger unit, just my .002.

I think i'm deciding on a 540 with a 10 71...or just a 10 71 on my 468?

a +.400 raised cam tunnel block would cure the rod problem but again, a 632cid bottom end would be overkill for a blown motor if you're only trying to make 1100hp.
for comparison, i made 1040hp with a tall deck 572 (4.5 bore x 4.5 stroke) that was topped with a crappy 8-71 weiand street blower spun 21% over and set of Holley 1000HP carbs.

I had a 632" motor in previos boat that was 10.5:1, fully ported and polished Dart 360 heads, dart tunnel ram, solid roller in the 280/288 @.050 range with .760" lift on 114. made 900hp on pump gas @6600rpm.
Here are some things to consider if you go this big. Start with a 4.56" bore for a ~622" motor, your Pro1 345's are too small, need bigger runner heads (Dart 370 ovals would be awesome) will need solid roller, knock duration down to ~268/274 and shoot for ~.700" net lift on 114 works and go with a "soft lobe" cam (slow ramps) or you'll never keep the lifters in it, trust me I know from breaking them...

The Dart 540 block I am running in my boat I bought and left a 540 for the reason that if something went wrong I could always bore it bigger:devil:
If I remember right you can safely bore the Dart blocks to 632;)
I make 955 hp @ 6200 rpm with a 6-71 @ 9lbs intercooled in a jet boat application, and thats with 325 Dart heads:idea:

Actually you can take them to 4.625"...which is a 638" motor...;)

4.5 x 4.5 with dart at 365 and M 5 procharger made 1069 with manifolds on pump gas with no problems. Both engines are completely reliable. Both idle at 900rpm. Tobi

we run an aluminum block in the dragster, just re-sleave it if you need to!!!! :D

switch that blown motor over to a alky blown motor with a "real tune-up" no dissrespect and that 468 will make over 1000 no prob......with 345's and a 8 or 10-71 with a oddy/schneider blower cam.....1000:jawdrop:

What does your current 468 make for power?

A small block, Procharger at 14 psi, and EFI will more than do what you want and still start easy and run smooth. You could even do it cheaper with a blow through carb setup.

I'd go with a 540 or put a 4.5" crank in in to make a 572. Throw a 10-71 on it, and you'll have reliable power all year long.

It is a pearl orange split window vette, he is going pro mod racing this next season....He just got his 526 KB, 14-71 kabelko(sp) hi hilex retro, fuel pump, and a brand new lenco. Oddy did the heads and the cam for him and he is just putting it togeather now.
Last season he ran it with a 509, 12-71 on alcohol and ran 6.80 @ 205.

If you need engine work, Use Jeff at LJengines@msn.com
He was the main engine builder,(SUB) for GT PERFORMANCE and went on his own . He used to do a lot of machine work for Pfaff.
HE WILL build anything( boat motor, baja motor you name it...) you want at a WAY lower price.
HE Has his OWN full machine shop and still located in so. Calif.
He has a lot of referances and stands behind his work/word.
He did a motor for a very good friend of mine out in Vegas and the engine package hauls a$$.

Cjordan, would you mind listing or scanning a copy of your cam card/specs? I'm interested in the timing and ramp info.
Thanks

If you up the 540 with a 4.5 inch stoke don't you run into piston pin to ring problems?? I have a 540 which used the 4.25 stoke crank and I still needed oil ring support rails since the pin broke into the oil ring groove.
A .250 increase in stroke would totally pass through the oil ring.
I wanted as thick a cylinder wall as I could get so settled for the 540.
Lots of room for overbores.
