There is really is not anywhere else to post this question so here it is. I would like to paint my engine with an actual paint gun vs. the old can method. I have shot paint and gel before with great results but I have never done a motor, unless it is with hi temp paint from a spray can. My engine will be cleaned down to the metal and wiped down with solvent to remove any residue. After that I need some help. What primer and paint should be used, mixing ratios, etc. etc. Thanks in advanced

I saw this and thought when did I do this and then I remembered I said you could use my stuff. I have the name of that company that sells engine paint by the quart at work.pop

paint it white that way you can see where its leaking from real easy :rollside:

No need for any special paint. I have painted engines with about any different paint out there. Usually acrylic enamel but have used base coat clear coat. Prepare and prime like you would prepare any steel surface.

Use emron, heat doesn't affect it. Thats what they use one engines of street rods and on airplanes. It'll look good for years.

I painted my v-drive's 427FE with a standard automotive two part urethane. Use acetone to wipe it down first. Started with a two part etching primer, then 2 coats primer, four coats color, four coats clear.
I did have to paint the exhaust ports with high heat black, but it's not really noticeable. I think BBCs won't have that problem, as the head is built differently.
It's going on three years, still looks good. :rollside:

Ya,what he said,i used delton base coat and concept clear only 2 coats of each on the block and heads.After 3 years the heads even look as good as when i sprayed it.This is on a bbc.Don't skip the etching primer either.

Correct on all the rest. Just use a good etching primer. The rest is purchased, mixed, and sprayed just like you would a car. Pick your favorite Acrylic Enamel. Imron is ok, but it is significantly harder than Acrylic. It tends to "break" easier. If there is a nick or scratch that happens to go to metal, the paint around it will break off from time to time. Kind of like glass breaking. The Acrylics seem to be more flexible in the hot/cold/hot/cold environment.
The areas around the exhaust port will blacken a little. If alum heads, moot point. If iron, most headers cover it well.
