I know at least 212* to burn off moisture and impurities but what would be considered too high?
Thanks!

I'd Also Like To Hear It. Also Shouldn't The Temp Of The Oil Somewhat Dictate The Weight Of Oil You Run?

An oil temp of 240 to 260 is safe and most hi perf engine builders that I know of recommend straight 40wt and straight 50wt with a blower motors. Just my

I would question the 40 wt. and 50 wt. for blowers. I guess everyone has there own theories
For what it is worth, I will take mobile "1" 15-50 for most performance applications. I am sure others have there preference, but for most it will be a multi-weight synthetic.
I have no scientific proof and maybe it depends on who you talk too.

40 wt Valvoline racing, 250 degrees max sustained. Brief over temp OK. 15 years w/ no oiling problems to 900 HP. 500 CI blown, 8 pds boost. Dino oil always.... Straight weight always. Never let me down.

220* to 250*. Synthetic gives you a safe max increase to arround 300*F. Higher temps equal shorter oil lifespan.

I've got a Dan Olson oil cooler on the shelf, How much temp. drop would I see running 70* water through it?

Just make sure it does not get too cool. Ford issued a statement many year ago that if the oil temperature were only 100 F, engine wear would be 8 times greater. If you have ever pulled the head off on old straight 6 that did not use a thermostat, you would see the taper in the front cylinder many time more than the rear.

The paper work with a Callies crank I had said the minimum temp for dino oil was 140* and synthetic 120*. If I remember right, this was 30wt. It had to be at least this warm to flow enough to protect the crank.

220 / 230 and I run high end synth 20-50 Per Gary Teague on just under 1200hp for the last 3yrs.Oil change every 25hrs. No issues

I like the 220-230-240 range also. Hot enough to get all moisture out and make the oil lubricate as intended, cool enough to avoid oil breakdown. I've run up to about 260 for extended periods with good quality oil, but really don't like it that hot.

what is a good oil cooler for a 496ho with a procharger at 3.5psi and what size if i need one

imo the first step always, is to put an oil temp gauge on it and see if you need, then depending on temp severety decide on cooler type and size. Otherwise you're just guessing and may actually make the oil too cool by installing a cooler unnecessarily.

I agree with your temps, but keep in mind, lower oil temps make shorter life as well. You want as much heat as you can without being too hot. Somewhere between 220 and 250 is great for non-synthetic.
