What is a safe ratio to run on my 97 2.5EFI260. The manual says 32:1 but some people are telling me to run 50:1 otherwise I will not get full performance. Any info would be appreciated.

What ratio to use depends on the oil.
What type of oil are you using?

Then it's a matter of how hard you run it.
Very few problems come from running a little rich, almost none!
On the other side, running lean can eat your engine! Lean toward the rich side if in doubt! http://free.***boat.net/ubb/wink.gif

A handful of fouled plugs and the possibility of excessive carbon build-up (over a period of time) far outweighs the nastiness brought on by a lean condition, ie: piston seizure, burned piston, frozen or broken rings, scored cylinders, etc. As HB said, if in doubt, lean to the rich side! (excuse the pun) Especially in a high heat climate!

The Merc Perf. series 2.5 EFI
Puts out 262 HP with the recomended
oil ratio: 32:1
So I would certanly use this mixture..
Dont go any leaner !
The 50:1 confusion is for stock
Mercs.

Run 32:1 and your motor will last. Remember these are High Performance motors with tighter tolerences and more friction.

What is everybody's feelings on running Amsoil 100:1 at a mix of 75:1? I've always run my motors this way, but I just want to be sure I am doing the right thing for my motor.

it depends on what you want 32:1 is better for the motor but 50:1 is designed for more rpms in order to change oil ratios i would recomend ptting an air box on the front of the motor

v6viking,I have been told Amsoil 100:1 is for smaller engines like lawn mowers and chain saws.I run Amsoil injecter oil at 40:1.

The Amsoil 100:1 is suitable for any stock premix application at the recommended 100:1 ratio(8 oz. to 6 gallons)regardless of the manufacturers recommendations. Applications altered for high performance and or racing should use the Series 2000 Racing oil premixed at 50:1. Note that this is also a premier injector oil straight from the bottle. The average pleasure boater is probably looking at the Amsoil Injector oil as the best match for injector use.

mercury racing synthetic blend
use the 32:1 ratio...no less!!! nothing else...
the top of the piston does not tell you how well things are lubricated...
anything else does not protect the crank bearings nearly as well...
this is not a weed-whacker here... stick to what mercury racing sells... the only thing that that oil is used for is the 2.5l ...they are not in buisness to make money on oil, and i'm sure they have tested everything else out there, and recommend what has proven to be the best.
also in regards to oil ratio... the more you put in there, the more power the engine will make... right up untill you foul the plugs...
Mcculloch proved that back in the early 1960's, and it still holds true today

i've used amsoil as little as 75 to 1 and have had no problems,i have a 280 hp,tryed merc hp and had many problems keeping plugs from fouling at 32 to1, so i tryed it at 50 to1 and cooked the power head. i will not trust any thing other than amsoil now

mmtech,
You mentioned that Mercury isn't in the business to make money selling oil. It's a known fact that branded products are a very lucrative profit center for all manufacturers. No, they aren't in the business of making or engineering lubricants, but they'll certainly contract out to someone to make some to fit certain minimum specs at a certain cost. Who's making Mercury's oil this year? Interesting to note that Amsoil is the official 2 cycle oil of the Laughlin Formula 1 Prop Tour. Most all of these folks run Mercs. If Amsoil was a threat of any kind to these motors and since Mercury Marine is an associate sponsor I doubt this would have come about.
