Spark Plugs:
These examples are just starting points
to get you going in the right direction.
Every application is different
and should be tested and tuned.
Compression .........................Spark Plug Gap
Up to 10.5:1..........................0.050"- 0.060"
10.5:1 to 13.0:1.....................0.040"- 0.050"
Above 13.0:1.........................0.035"- 0.045"

How acurate is this and how many of you fallow this ?
I am @ 10.5:1 and have been running all season at 0.040". Is there more power or just better/more spark less chance of fouling plugs at idel ?

I was told that gap is not nearly as important as the having the ground strap square to the center electrode. Usually when you gap with a cheap gapping tool you will get your specified gap but not all the way across the electrode. I'm running NGK race plugs at 0.030 out of the box.

Ross. You're outside the lines. Are you running Nitro, NOS, Alky or Propane?????????? LMAO, RR

Type of ignition is more of a factor in gap than compression.

I went with what MSD recommends, figured it's there ignition system they've done the testing to see what works best. The book called for a smaller gap, it made sense to me that since the MSD gave off a more powerful spark that a larger gap could be run.

Whats up man, did you put that Rogers in the water yet ?

Unless your current ignition system is actually not working properly, all you will likely gain is a better idle.
Not any more HP that you would ever notice this side of a dyno readout.

No man not yet. Took some time off after building the motor. Need to get the pump over to MPD for some upgrades and I have some minor work to do to the boat before I can drop the new motor. Heading to the river for a week so I will get hot on it when I get home. I think we are all heading to Yuma next weekend (part 2 of my week long trip). You should roll out if you can pull it.
ST Sorry to jack the thread.:)

Its cool Ross
OK I talked with MSD today and they said that I should be running .045, so that is .005 larger than I was running before. It sure would be nice to find some extra power. I did find that 4 treminal ends were broke and arching, I wonder how long that has been like that. They are new MSD wires this season.

When I was at the dyno a few weeks back I did ask about spark plug gaps and if there was power to be found. The answer that I got was "Every motor is different and in most cases we have never found any power increases with gaps wider than the standard 0.035. The only improvements that we have seen were at idle and part throttle which were very minimal. Just use a good ignition system." Which you have. However as stated in my above post there has been some losses when the center electrode and the ground strap of the plug were not gapped square.
