View Full Version : Who is using what for Computer Protection?

OCMerrill

From spyware, botts, email crap, etc?
Not that there really is any true protection.
In recent past I used Webroot Anti spyware but the crap still let in something and it grabbed my active desktop. Long story short I had to redo the freaking computer. I would almost give my own opinion that some of this anti-spyware actually attracts the shit.
Now that I am all up and running on this box again I feel the need to install some kind of protection again.
Tell me what you think is best.
I am out for the rest of the day so I will reply this evening.
Thanks.

AVG free works teriffic.
Then ya add the free Microsoft security and firewall.
Much smoother than Norton.
We don't need it with our Apple, but the payback is most electronic devices don't seem to jive completely with Apple unless their Ipod/iTunes ect ect.

Thanks Ross - I will look into AVG. Is it just that Apple's are not susceptible to Internet spyware? Sometimes I swear I am done with the whole PC thing and look at Apple stuff but just can't get into it. But, maybe I just fear change.:D

Apples are bulletproof.
That computer guy on KABC says it's the way to go.
But when used by a dope like me, it's like putting earings on your jackass.
Apple is overkill for our basic home needs.

If you had asked me 2 weeks ago I would have said norton for AVS, but after 10 years of using thier products with out a hitch, I had a major issue with upgraded to the new version. Let just say thier custmer support was less helpful, it was not until they got a letter from my lawyer did they agree to send me the forms I needed to get a refund from them. ( long stroy short it made it so I could not even turn the PC on.. they kept saying they could email me the forms to get a refund... It was like, hey dumb ass I can't even use my computer)

That's what happens when you open source UNIX code and let everybody in the world work on your OS.
So Microsoft exposed to the world, Apple not so much.
Firefox...Chasing that one now.
Maybe I will just put it all on. :D This last go-around got in deep.

Damn. I have been down the McCaffree, Norton, and now Webroot path. Problems with all. Nothing like you describe though. Holy hell.

Don't blame the PC platform. Blame the Operating System. Problem Solved and it's free (http://www.mandriva.com/en/download) :D
I do run a Windooze machine most of the time and use Symantec/Norton. People complain about it bogging down their machine but if you have a machine with balls enough to run it you'll never notice it's there. Also use Firefox to browse the web with. I have very few places I frequent on the web and seldom have a need to blast through hundreds of sites to satisfy my curiosity about something which also helps keep my machine bug free.
I'm not immune to getting hit with the occasional bug it happens to everybody eventually if they're running Wind ooze. It's the nature of the beast.
I have never, ever gotten a bug while running Linux.
I can't speak for Apple , I don't do fruit.
Here's a little something I wrote a while back on the ultimate Windooze setup. I've Been doing this for years and everyone I have personally instructed in the process has been very happy with it. Too happy I guess because I rarely ever have to work on their machines again.

I used to use just Ad-aware and Spybot s&e but caught something I couldn't find so went with AVG anti-virus and the AVG spyware catcher (that one is pay after a trial so I no longer have it) and SUPER antiSpyware.
I run one or the other every couple of days and they always catch something. If I run them back to back they each find something the other missed it seems.
I haven't caught a virus (yet??) it's the spy ware / ad ware that kills me. After using all the above I finally got rid of the one that was bugging me. (In IE it kept popping up ads every two minutes) I use Firefox too for normal stuff but IE works better for some streaming audio (Sirus and KFI)
Good luck...

I need baby steps here. A new operating system for me at this point would require the use of meds and possibly a really big hammer of some sort.:)
By the way 10 is out now by what I just read on Sun's website.

It is easy ! If you decide to do it and run into problems I will be glad to help in any way I can.
The place most people have trouble is in the BIOS and the boot sequence. The rest of it is pretty straight forward and self explanatory.
Shoot me a PM and I'll give you my # if you think you'll need it.

Norton Utility Suite
Mcaffee Anti-Virus
Sygate Personal Firewall Professional
Hardware firewall in the router also
For spyware/addware, no 1 product seems to get it all, so use 2 or 3.
Addaware, version 6
Spybot Search & Destroy
The popup stopper and adware removers in System Mechanic utilities
Machine runs very smoothly.
Several machines here run very smoothly with this combination.
I keep the spyware rograms on manual, and run every few weeks or so.
Thinking any software will "get everything" is foolish.

I have used Spybot several years ago. It must be better now...?
I have been infected severely 3x over the past 10 years or so. Spybot was at the helm time before last. It was free back then also.
I don't care if it's free or not I just want it to work.

i dont use anything, but then again i made the evil switch to mac a little less than a year ago....never have looked back... i love it. the biggest problem is windows has you trained to over think everything. its hard to just plug stuff in and have it work while trying to find a driver. no need, just use it... its great!!!

AVG Free
Spybot
Adaware
I've built about 45 systems for myself, friends and some business'. Never had one issue with this set up and it's all free.
I also use those three, as well as, Zone Alarm's free firewall, McAffee's Stinger (stand-alone trojan/virus killer utility), PanicWare's Pop Up Stopper, Hijack This (for analyzing/spotting problems in registry), and Mozilla Firefox browser.
I recently acquired a second hand computer that I had to reformat three times. I have finally got it working "okay" and successfully got my XPSP1 updated to XPSP2. During the updates process I had to use Internet Explorer and all those programs helped me overcome MAJOR issues the worst of which was the about:blank hijacking virus. That was the least fun I've ever had with a computer to put it mildly. :D

Product reviews on the internet are like assholes, I've come to find out.
Isn’t that the truth.
I worked on a lawsuit involving spyware software with a high rating by CNET, despite the fact it sucked; was laughable in the spyware industry; and was actually written with stolen code, which CNET knew about. Russian mobsters flexing their red influence apparently.
That kinda spoiled it for me (that and the fact Russian mobsters were making anti-spyware software:idea:    )
----------------
It’s all in the sites you visit.
My computer is nearly 6 years old, on its second reformat and still runs great using the regular stuff like Spybot, AVG and McAfee. Connected 24/7, 365 days.
----------------------
The other day I forgot to say “Hi” to my wife’s computer as I walked by.
It runs Vista and later that day, it retaliated with an “Imminent Hard Drive Failure.”
Nice.
