View Full Version : Need a Big Block Dodge...

Like I need a project, but I am about to embark upon a restoration-hop up of a 1974 Dodge Ramcharger. I am a Mopar guy from way back, and I plan on running this number with no lift, nice rims and tires, rhinolined interior, no lid or doorframes, half doors and have the ultimate beach cruiser for San Diego.
It has a small block in it, with a great T-case and a 727 auto. The B or RB block will bolt right in, and since I am doing the exhaust, rebuilding the motor and swapping out the carb and manifold anyway, I figure I may as well do it to a big block instead.
So... anyone got a 440 or 383 kicking around looking to become something?

i think you should go 5 cyl 12 valve and really make it go:D

Thought about it. And I thought of finding a balled-up Viper and putting a V-10 in it, but realistically I can rebuild a 440 for very little money for this purpose... And I do love me some big block Dodges... :D

Too much work. I am looking forward to knocking out the project and calling it a day.
Plus, nothing in that drivetrain would live...

413? The big blocks displacements that I know of were 383 for a "B" block, and 426,440 for the "RB" block. The 426 was both a Hemi displacement and the Max Wedge.
Most Moho's that I have seen were 440's.

Yea 413 was a big block dodge size. Came out of a motorhome that had bout 60,000 odo on it? Planning to put it in something, but my father's got WAY too many motors laying around, he's got a bunch of other big block dodge's but they're all rare castings blocks/heads.
But the motor is either a 413 or 426... just can't remember quite right now

See if he wants to off it. Sounds perfect! :D Gotta be a 62 or 63...

How fast you want to go? I know where there's a tube chassis new body style drag truck that will go 8's as it sits for 100k with the trailer, spare parts/motors and probably 40k worth of Snap On tools. You could probably part the setup out and make money. :)
Seriously though...not sure what trans you want to use but we have 47RH at work. It was rebuilt but missing the converter and valve body. That's got the mechanical governor on it, not the electronic one. Basically the 4-speed version of the 727TF. Used in 94-95 Dodge Rams'. $1200 gets that one, including the kick ass Scribner Plastics shipping crate.

Hands down my favorite brand. Tough to beat the 2500 Chevy and Corvettes today, but I am a BBD guy from way back. Roadrunners, Coronets, Darts, Chargers... no E-bodies, but I did love them. Just never owned one.
Love the B bodies though. Always have. They are fast at the drags when set up nicely, sound awesome and are great to work on. I still feel that the BBD is the best designed big block ever built from an engineering standpoint.
I love that we switched to Viper power in the boats, and can't wait to own a Viper here soon.

Well, that would save me from having to ship it out there...
It was pretty much coming right to you anyway. At least to fit the short block and do the head work. I will never have anyone else build one of my engines for anything.
So don't be suprised if you see a lawnmower show up on your doorstep some day with a rod out the side... :D

Why not just put a Mitsuibishi 3.0 L, convert to FWD. Think of the oooo's and ahhhhh"s you'll get from the green community! Wes, as an inovator it's up to you to lead the way...away from the big gas guzzling horsepower engines of yesterday and think economy! Think of the ozone, think of the pollution..think of greenhouse gasses being minimized one person at a time.
Ok. I have to run and flare a well off here.. and clean up a diesel spill.

the low compression 440 was an option for the Ramcharger through the body change in 1980. To rebuild the 440 properly without going over the top, including line honing, bore job, decking, and new everything, plan on about $3,200. This engine will NOT please you unless the compression is about 10:1, so the heads have to be cc'd to determine the deck and piston height. strongly suggest using JE pistions. I know as I have done many for my muscle cars. My engine builder is Jay at Advanced Enging Maching in HB. he has done Mopars for 30+ years.
If you want to make it different, the 727 trans is reworked by some to a 4 speed od unit.
Photo of the last car this i did, first place in class at the first show.

Hmmmm Spring Fling or Fall Fling?
That sounds a little expensive to me but hey, I'm a budget man :D. Last 440 cost about $2000 not including carb, made about 450hp estimation.
But then again if yuo're going to buy all the parts individually, heads, block, crank and all that I could see $3200

BoatPI
09-28-2007, 04:28 PM
Spring Fling. And then parts are not getting cheeaper, at least a 727 is $900 to build.
Need another Mopar???

The hell with all the gas motors! Go with a 12 valve Cummins! Build it up and you could have a truck you could go m wheelin' in and take it to the track and race it! It's one of the best engines to sup up and it won't cost you much at all.

Sounds like a fun project. The only Dodge I ever owned was a short bed, 1/2 ton pickup my dad bought for me at a Gas Company auction. It had the legendary and reliable slant six engine and 3 speed auto tranny (with the shifter on the dash).
He bought it for $700, with 90,000 miles. I sold it ten years and 200,000 miles later for $1700.
Original engine and tranny, never did anything to it but change the oil and the brakes.
Great truck!
