I'm in the process of painting the bottom after spending a regoddamndickulas amount of time on the bottom. I've got some SpeedCoat that will go on the bottom after I spray the Concept Singlestage and would like to see how/where others have put the Speedcoat. It's a v-bottom Brendella (similar to a Southwind) and there's a post on here somewhere with my project.
Anybody got some pics? Thanks a bunch..........John

ITS A WASTE OF TIME IF THE BOTTOM IS FRESHLY PAINTED AND SMOOTH;) :D

It's a spray on graphite coating. Idea is to relieve some of the surface tension of the water against
the bottom. You can buy it in gallons, quarts, or spray cans.

I would agee. I shot mine, but it was because I blueprinted the bottom and didn't want to gelcoat it.
It's way way cheaper and easier. I knew it wouldn't hurt anything. I seriously doubt just shooting the
bottom with slip plate, speed coat etc. would result in any gains though.
This is what mine looked like after blueprinting, then priming, then speed coating.
Like the impatient one said, If it's already painted or gelcoated......just go with that.

Thanks X man but damn, is it just me or is that bassakwards?
Thanks for the replies guys. I'm using it regardless of what I ultimately gain. Hopefully by the time I add everything up the outcome will hopefully be a positive.
Thanks Squirt. Appreciate the reply
Keep the pics coming guys

Haha yea no worries I figured that may throw you for a loop lol
We paint that on alot of our boats but we use it more for a bit of abrasion protection on bare aluminum when you're sliding over a gravel bar or something. On that particular boat in the pictures it also looks better seeing as its a "side paint" boat.
The Steptec style hull does not need it in the rear area as in the pics you can see the centerpod is actually Qt100 steel and the sides are stepped

No problem. It's real easy to use. Just tape, spray and wipe it shiny with a dry towel.

Dan, you mean you don't let it dry before you wipe it down?

and wear a good mask, or you'll be coughin up black crap for days;)
i agree, speedcoat is great for covering work, inside pumps etc..its just not needed on a high gloss'd bottom or good shiny gelcoat.bet that it does work good on tin boats too!

Looks as though I left out a step or two. Yup on the mask. Nasty stuff.
Yes, it has to dry before wiping it down, but it dries really quick.

Here's some pics of my bottom all done and painted.
76 Sleekcraft Aristocrat.
No speedcoat here,
I'd rather sacrifice just a tad of speed to have it looking really nice.
Primed and ready to paint

I also disagree that speedcoat makes no difference. Speedcoat (graphite) repels water. A painted polished surface does not. It may not be a huge difference, but I guarantee there's a difference.

it working, i'd love to have 1, but its outta my $$$$$ range.
serious question for you tin boat owners: do they get cavitation burns on the hull?
if speedcoated the ENTIRE BOTTOM on my sj, yes it help, felt slipperly when wet, but i honestly don't think i gained 1mph outta it. my trailer was fresh and after 3months on the trailer, the bunks were almost black from the graphite.
WILL SOMEONE PLEASE DEVELOPE A TEFLON COATING THAT CAN BE APPLIED AT LOW TEMPS, MAYBE USE SOME KINDA ACTIVATOR OR CATALYST TO CURE IT???????? you tin boat guys otta find a low temp telfon and see if anyone around has a pc back booth big enough to bake it on with;) that'd be scary slick!!!!!

This is just prior to wet sanding the rocker area with 600 grit. I went with the same finish used by some of the worlds fastest circle boats and info derived from Lake X testing from Mercury Marine.
Only thing left is a hand applied coat of some hifalootin speed wax called kiss coat.

Maybe I should've said "a measureable difference". The point I was trying to make is that
if have a nice smooth bottom (that sounded weird) whether it be gelcoat or paint, and you
flipped a boat over to speed coated the bottom (nothing else.......just the speed coat)
you more than likely won't see a speed increase, or at least not enough to justify all the work.
Since he's already got her flipped and sounds like he bought the material.......what the hell.
This looks pretty cool. Even if it didn't work it still looks trick as hell.

There are many theories on bottom coatings and textures. Billy B hand roller ed his speed coat to achieve a rough surface.
He was thinking along the lines of a golf ball in flight breaking up the drag. Running 147 with a true (non runner) flatbottom he may be on to something.

Okay, I did it and you guys arent kidding when you say that's some nasty stuff. Yuk.
In the end, I dont know if it'll do a thing but I think it looks cool so I'm happy.
Was kinda a bummer to take after the brand new paint with some sandpaper to give this stuff something to bite in to.
