LAS VEGAS — A young girl who was seen being sexually assaulted in a homemade videotape has been found and is safe with relatives and sheriff's officials, authorities said Friday.
"She looks like a very happy 7-year-old girl," Nye County sheriff's Detective David Boruchowitz said at a news conference late Friday. She was 3 when the tape was made, he said.
Chester Arthur Stiles, who was previously being sought for questioning, is now considered a suspect but remains at large, Nye County Sheriff Tony DeMeo said.
Stiles has tenuous ties to the family through friends, Boruchowitz said.
The crime took place in Las Vegas, where the girl was found, DeMeo said. The girl's mother recognized furniture and a television from scenes in the videotape, and she was cooperating with the investigation, he said.
"The mother was not aware of anything that went on with this young girl," he said.
Widespread media accounts of the case led to the crucial tip that helped find the girl, Boruchowitz said. Volunteers screened 4,000 to 5,000 tips that came in from across the country and around the world, DeMeo said.
Police released information they would not normally release in such crimes, such as a photograph of the girl, DeMeo said.
"We sat down ... and said, 'You know what? We have nothing else,"' he said.
Earlier in the day, authorities gave to the media a first name for the girl, whose haunting face could be seen in the video in which she was raped and sexually assaulted.
The Associated Press is no longer identifying or releasing photos of the girl because she is a suspected victim of sexual abuse. It did so earlier in the interest of the girl's safe recovery.
Stiles, 37, whose last known address was Las Vegas, is wanted on an unrelated state warrant on a charge of lewdness with a minor younger than 14 and a federal charge of being a fugitive, DeMeo said.
Investigators determined that the video of the attack was recorded over the video of an 11-year-old girl taped through a window of a Pahrump home, DeMeo said.
Officials identified that girl, now 13, after releasing photos taken from the video and matched to records of a "peeping Tom" report at her home. No one was found outside the girl's home when deputies arrived, and the girl wasn't assaulted, authorities said.
A 26-year-old Pahrump man, Darren Tuck, surrendered the tape to Nye County sheriff's investigators Sept. 8 and told investigators he found it in the desert five months earlier, Boruchowitz said.
Police are looking for Tuck, who will be incarcerated on a probation violation, DeMeo said.
Tuck was arrested on suspicion of promoting child pornography and possession of child pornography, both felonies, and released without bail pending an appearance Nov. 26 in Pahrump Justice Court. The top charge carries a possible sentence of up to life in prison.
Tuck's lawyer Harry Kuehn called it "irresponsible" for authorities to say it had been five months since Tuck found the tape, but he declined to say when it was discovered.
Kuehn also stressed that the Nye County district attorney had not filed formal charges against his client. He said the tape was found wrapped in a plastic shopping bag and hidden beneath a fallen sign used as a launch pad for jumps and tricks by dirt cyclists.
Another lawyer for Tuck, Thomas Gibson, has characterized his client as an innocent middleman who should be credited for giving the tape to authorities.

i can understand the police detaining him, but when the mother comes forward recognizes furniture and the child but not the man that turned it in.. i believe thats cause for release. sometimes your just better off keeping your mouth shut when you think your gonna help.

Another thing I want to know is how in the hell does a parent not know where thier 3 year old child is and if something is wrong? A three year old being gone long enough to be raped and the parents have no clue until years later??? Something else is wrong here. I'm thinking parents on drugs and not really caring. I may be wrong but I know for damn sure that I always knew and still know where my kids are and who they are with.

A man accused of holding and showing off a tape depicting the sexual assault of a 3-year-old girl was taken into custody Sunday on a probation violation, authorities said.
Darrin Tuck, 26, arranged to surrender after evading arrest since Friday, said Nye County Sheriff Tony DeMeo. Prosecutors are set to formally charge Tuck with possession of child pornography and possibly promoting child pornography on Monday, DeMeo said.
Tuck had been on probation for desertion and failure to pay child support, but his probation was revoked, authorities said. Officials were unable to arrest him Friday night because he could not be found.
His defense attorney, Harry Kuehn, said probation was revoked on "a technicality" for not paying child support. DeMeo said the revocation came after Nevada's Division of Parole and Probation learned the district attorney would file formal criminal charges.
Tuck has told authorities he found the tape in the desert, but authorities said he possessed it for as long as five months before turning it in. He was arrested earlier this month in the case and released without bail pending a court appearance.
Tuck was being held at the Nye County Detention Center.
The girl in the tape was located after authorities on Friday released information they would not normally disclose in order to get tips from the public, including a picture, DeMeo said. The widespread media attention led someone to call the girl's mother, who contacted police but did not know about the assault, authorities said.
Kuehn said he was unaware his client had surrendered, but noted it was "a good thing." He also denied that his client had showed the video to others.
"The sheriff's office has exaggerated the extent of their evidence and seriously jeopardized our client's chance of a fair trial," Kuehn said.
The videotape was made at a Las Vegas residence that did not belong to the girl's family, officials said, though her mother recognized furniture seen in still images of the tape.
Authorities are still searching for Chester "Chet" Arthur Stiles, 34, who is suspected of sexually abusing the girl.
Stiles also is wanted on an unrelated state warrant issued last year charging lewdness with a minor under 14 years of age and on a federal fugitive warrant.
