They are a lot of responsibility. They get meaner as they are older and can be dangerous. I would say it is a very bad idea............however..........if he gets one, I'd like to see it ;)

Some can live to be 80 years old, so it's a HUGE commitment. Not to mention, it's like spending your life with a retarded 3 year old who never matures, is never potty trained, and wants to be with you everywhere you go. Knew of someone who had one, and if it didn't get enough attention it would start vandalizing the house. The strange things started happening at the neighbor's house... they had a daughter and all the eyes started disappearing out of her dolls. The monkey was going over to the neighbor's and started screwing with things over there. :jawdrop:
Thanks but no thanks.

If he gets one i will be sure to post a picture of it in his house. BUT after the few posts here its not looking to good for him.I had no idea that they got meaner when they got older. Not to mention the piss and stuff, sounds like alot of work to me. But its not me getting the monkey. This guy will read this in the AM Im sure he will think twice about it though. Ive heard they can cost a few thousand.

Its also illegal in CA to own a primate...there is massive ammounts of paper work and permits to be able to own one... frankly it would be easier to buy a AR in CA then it would a monkey.

one!! why not get like 3 or 4? If you think one would be a good idea think of how great 4 would be. Definately do it! Who cares about the law, figure it out afterwards.

Try and locate the episode of Hogan KNows Best from last season. They had a monkey that Linda wanted and ended up giving it back. They had a diaper on it and when it sh*t in the diaper, the sh*t would be all clumped up in the hair. It was a nasty, dirty little thing.

My dad was a pilot in the Air Force during WWII, stationed on Guam, and he had a pet monkey. On leave, he met my mom in Long Beach. She was working for the Defense Department, and the general my dad was a pilot for got her transfered to Guam.
The day my mom walked into where he lived in Guam, the monkey went nuts, clawed and bit her and my dad.
He had to shoot the thing with his service issued 45.
They are not good pets....there are many stories about "pet" monkeys much worse then this one.
By the way, they were married on Guam in the officers club and stayed married untlil he died last year....I guess he liked her better then the monkey:D .

My old roomie used to own a pet store. I started kicking around the idea that I wanted a monkey that would wear a jersey with the print number 1 printed on the front and "spunkey monkey" on the back. I was going to build a small chair mounted above the couch facing the tv, cause you know how monkey's like sports and they like to party, and he would retrieve beers on command. While telling my story about my dreams of owning a monkey my roomies dad cruised in and said "you didn't tell him did you". I was jazzed, I had all kinds of thoughts about how he was about to tell me they have a monkey on delivery and it will be here in 2 days. I can already picture me and monkey going to the mall and running on the beach together. NAY, that twas not the case. He proceeded to tell me how his dad bought him a spider monkey when he was 6. By the time he was 10 the monkey was ruined. Tossing his own crap around and raising hell everywhere. A few of his buddy's would come over cause they heard he had a monkey. They would stare at the monkey with glee and then say "I want to play with it". My buddy's dad tossed them some boxing gloves and let them have a go. A few broken noses and multiple lacerations later the monkey found a new home in a small wooden box a few feet below the backyard grass.

If you want to own exotics move to Texas. They can basically have anything they want there. My wife went there for a Vet Tech training seminar at some college down there. She got to work on Tigers and crazy shit like that.
But as far as a monkeys goe, they do throw poo and they stink real bad. So I wouldn't get one.

As an owner of three monkeys, i'll tell you the truth. Well OK two are lesser apes and one is a ring tail lemur. Now first i know there are laws about it, here in Florida we have to have a special permit for them, and depending on the type you might have to have a comercial use.
As far as a pet goes they are not pets, they will always have there animal behaviors. They take a lot of dediction, like stated earlier they a very much like a toddler that never grows up, but are very smart and able to do things most kids can't, like get into the cabniet that is above their heads. Most primates do live a long time, and grow very strong. Something like a chimp will be 4-9 times as strong as a normal adult by the time they are 5 (they live 50+ years). Here in Florida you need experiance with them, before owning. Now they can be a good animal if treated right, and most of your time dedicated to them, but this does not mean they make good pets.
As a baby they are cute and cuddly and cling to their blankets. As they get older they are like kids (into everything). Oh yeah did i mention teeth...so get them pulled (not nice and I would never do this) they still have strong jaw muscles and that can do enough damage on it's own. Now if your friend wants to learn about them, has no kids or kids are grown, wants to dedicate all of his free time to the monkey, build an appropriate enclosure for it, gets it a mate or friend (no animal should be alone) then he might have a good animal he can interact with. Also though his wife or signifigant other needs to have the same dedication, but that doesn't mean the animal will respect her either. Most monkeys live in a society with dominate figures, most monkeys don't want to be the low guy, so that will always be an issue with them as well.
I could go on more but i think you get the idea. Of course there is also the purchase cost of the moneky (most aren't cheap). A chimp can go for over 40,000.... The cage isn't cheap either, and food, need fresh fruits and veggies, plus we feed a comercial diet made for them, thats not bad it's cost about the same as dog food..but fruit adds up quick.
Getting a monkey isn't something to be taken lightly of, they aren't like a dog, you need to know what you are doing before you step into one. If your friend wants to learn more about them he could talk to people that have them, just remember it is a life long dedication.

My Grandfather was a veterinarian and took care of some exotic animals. One day my dad got a call from him to come take care of a crazy monkey at a customers house. The monkey had been trying to attack everyone for a couple of days.
Being an avid hunter, my dad took the opportunity to snipe it with a 30-6 at 50 yards. Bulls eye, right behind the ear. :D Not good pets

Mid 1970's a friends neighbor had one, his name was "jack off" because he was bored and that's what he did most of the time. And the little bastard was mean, but then again so are some dogs if they aren't raised correctly.
But dog's don't have hands and teeth. The "F"ing thing could turn damn near anything into a weapon it could throw a rock 30 yards.
We'll anyway I don't think they make good pet's from what I have seen and what others have written.
But good luck with that.....
