2 thing's......
1) How do you hang yourself, when your in a holding cell with hang cuffs on, at an airport on high alert.
2) What is the "proper procedure in subduing the woman", different than that of subduing a man...?
From the little I've seen of this, the police is going to have big trouble defending a lawsuit. Is it not ok to have a nervious breakdown at an airport, without getting arrested. She missed her flight, and I'm sure she just wanted help.
Police release arrest video of woman who died at airport

Phoenix police released a video this afternoon of the arrest of a woman who later died at Sky Harbor International Airport.
The video shows officers detaining 45-year-old Carol Ann Gotbaum, who died in a holding cell after being arrested for disorderly conduct.
Police distributed the video at a 3 p.m. press conference at Sky Harbor International Airport.
Gotbaum's family has said they suspect Gotbaum was "manhandled" by police. Police have said they followed proper procedure in subduing the woman, who was on her way to Tucson for treatment at an alcohol rehabilitation facility.
Gotbaum is stepdaughter of New York labor leader Victor Gotbaum, who is married to New York City Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Minute by minute
On Friday, Carol Gotbaum arrived at Sky Harbor International Airport about 12:30 p.m. On Wednesday, Phoenix police provided the following account of what happened next. Their timeline is based on conversations with 15 witnesses, five officers and other investigative information:
Gotbaum arrived alone at Sky Harbor. She was supposed to then fly to Tucson. According to US Airways officials, Gotbaum was denied access to a flight in Terminal 4. There was a verbal altercation at the gate in Concourse B between Gotbaum and the gate attendant. Gotbaum became agitated and loud, and at some point, threw her handheld PDA, just missing a person. The PDA broke into pieces. Gotbaum left the gate area.
2:49 p.m. Phoenix police working at the airport received a radio call about a woman being loud and causing a disturbance at Concourse B. Two officers responded and located Gotbaum on the concourse. Before the officers contacted Gotbaum, they heard her yelling and observed her actions. They then tried to calm her, but she continued to yell and scream. Within 15 seconds of contacting her, they were joined by a third officer and attempted to arrest her for disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor.
2:53 p.m. Gotbaum and the officers ended up on the floor as they tried to handcuff her. The officers did not use pepper spray or a Taser. They then got Gotbaum on her feet, and two officers took her to a holding area. Gotbaum was handcuffed with her hands behind her back. She was still uncooperative, and the officers had to periodically slide her forward, with each officer holding an arm, in order to get her to the holding area.
Gotbaum was placed in a small holding room with a solid door and a small window. There were seven police employees in the holding area at the time. A female officer came to search Gotbaum, but Gotbaum continued to be uncooperative and didn't allow the search.
She was then additionally restrained as follows: In the holding room, there is a bench with an eyehook attached to it. The officers took a shackle, which is described as a metal chain, approximately 16 inches long, with a large handcuff on each side.
The total length of the chain with handcuffs is approximately 24 inches. One of the handcuffs on the shackle was attached to the eyehook on the bench. The other handcuff of the shackle was attached to the chain of the handcuffs that were on Gotbaum. So Gotbaum was handcuffed with her hands behind her back, and those handcuffs were attached to a shackle that kept her attached to the bench.
Officers felt that Gotbaum was not a threat to others or to herself and left her alone. They went to the holding area just outside the holding room. Gotbaum continued to yell and scream for six to eight minutes.
When she stopped, the officers went to check on her.
The officers found Gotbaum unconscious. Initial information indicates that she had worked the handcuffs to the front of her body, probably from under her legs, and had pulled the chain from the shackle across her neck area. The medical examiner will determine the manner and cause of death.
The officers called the Fire Department, removed the handcuffs and shackle, and began mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and CPR. While doing mouth-to-mouth, Gotbaum vomited into one officer's mouth. The officer then spit up but continued to do mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while CPR continued. The officers also attempted to use a defibrillator. Several minutes later, fire officials arrived and took over lifesaving attempts.
3:29 p.m. Gotbaum was pronounced dead by Fire Department personnel.
How to help
Phoenix police have interviewed more than 20 people in connection with the death of Carol Gotbaum but are seeking others who observed the Friday incident at Sky Harbor International Airport. Witnesses are asked to call the Violent Crimes Bureau at (602) 262-6141.

The chick had some issues. She was on her way to Tucson to a treatment facility.
I travel often, actually frequently meaning more than 4 times per month. If have never missed a aflight from a layover, even only arriving 20 mintues before the departing flight. She was there 90 minutes for her layover to Tucson.

Oh come on now... you know that nothing is ever anyone's fault these days... They should have held that airplane for her... and the gate agent shouldn't have used that tone of voice... and she was not going to calm down, she missed her airplane... and those cops were being unreasonable when they asked here to keep it under controll... and... and... and.... ackckckckckck...
I keep saying there are to many people in this world... and the world keeps proving me right.

She needed more booze before she could fly to rehab. C'mon, one last final, final, final.

If she had 1/2 a clue, she could have taken a shuttle and been there 90 minutes later. Take a limo and drink all the way to the door of rehab. Limo would have cost about $500, but the treatment facility was thousands upon thousands to get the treatment. $500 is nothing if you are going to that place.

And when has anyone gone to rehab ALONE. There is usually an escort to make sure they get there safely. Doesn't anyone watch "Intervention"?

Yea, from the video, she looks pretty crazy, more then just a few drinks in her system.....
And as BC said, why not have some one go with her to get her into rehab:confused:
Her family has the money...."Gotbaum is stepdaughter of New York labor leader Victor Gotbaum, who is married to New York City Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum. "
And if she was going to "Sierra Tucson", it's one of the most expensive treatment centers in the country.

It's a sad story, but from what I have read and from seeing the video, it's not the fault of the airport or police, they seem to have handled her properly.

Only problem I see with that story is that an Officer performed mouth to mouth without using a mask. Are you kidding me???? Unless you are my family or close friend, I'm not putting my mouth on a stranger to perform CPR. That's why they make CPR masks. It said she vomited in the officer's mouth:eek: WOW.

I usually dont post much on here, but there is more to this..
In the last few months there has been a lot of training and education in the fire department and police department in re-guards to a new medical diagnosis called EXCITED DELIRIUM. Basically it is when the body has an increased psychological stimulus which in turn sends and abundant amount of adrenaline to the body and the patients body temperature increases at a rapid rate and then goes in to cardiac arrest. Usually associated with drug use or psych disorders. That is a very simple definition of what happens. You can google days of reading on the subject. Most of this education came about from all of the lawsuits with Taser International. The incident at Sky Harbor was ruled excited delirium today. Phoenix Police will have no problem defending this at all.

So an article came out today that her husband called the airport dispatcher multiple times to try and convey that his wife was traveling through there and she was suicidal.
What the hell is wrong with this family? You send your wife to rehab and dont go with her to drop her off? Are the 12 hours of flying time round trip just not worth it? These people are a focking joke. Did she deserve to die? No, absolutley not. However her family NOW cares for her regard. Come on.

A desperate call to Sky Harbor
Husband warned airport of wife's problems
Jahna Berry and Casey Newton
The Arizona Republic
Oct. 5, 2007 12:00 AM
On the same afternoon that Phoenix police arrested a hysterical woman at Sky Harbor International Airport, her husband in New York placed repeated, urgent phone calls to airport authorities, warning them that his wife was suicidal and should not be left alone.
The officers who took Carol Gotbaum into custody didn't know her identity at the time, police said. They handcuffed her, took her from the scene and, because they didn't believe she was a threat to herself or others, placed her alone in a holding room.
Minutes later, they found her dead.
Police reports released Thursday show that her husband, Noah Gotbaum, made increasingly desperate attempts to reach Sky Harbor authorities. But his warnings apparently never reached officers.
"She is suicidal," Noah told an airport dispatcher, according to a transcript made public Thursday. "She is . . . alcohol abusive."
"Uh-hum," the dispatcher said.
"She is also in deep depression and, um, the police have to understand that they're not dealing with someone who's been just drinking on (a) flight and . . . acting rowdy," Noah said.
"OK. Yeah, I think somebody talked to the other dispatcher on that earlier and ... we passed along."
He expressed concern that Carol had been left "all alone."
"Uh-hum," the dispatcher responded.
"OK? Because she should not be."
With each call, Noah became more frustrated, the transcripts show, saying his wife had a medical condition. He wanted the airport to treat her with extreme care, he said.
Police, he said, were "playing with real fire right now."
What ensued was a tragic death that spurred national media attention and questions about how the case was handled.
A missed flight
Carol, a member of a prominent New York political family, had left New York that morning, planning to check herself into an alcohol-rehabilitation program at Cottonwood de Tucson.
After arriving at Sky Harbor, she was scheduled to take a 1:30 p.m. flight to Tucson. She arrived at the gate at 1:06 p.m., according to a statement gate agent Rikki Greiner gave police.
Because the flight was full and overbooked, the airline had given her seat away, Greiner'sstatement said.
Greiner promised to get her on the next flight, at 2:58, and offered her a free round-trip ticket, but Carol "was borderline hysterical because she missed the first flight," the statement said.
Carol complained and later came back to the agent with a ticket from another passenger.
She wanted to give that passenger the free round-trip ticket and wanted to take his seat, instead.
That would be a security breach, Greiner said.
"It was at that point that Ms. Gotbaum began screaming and running around," the statement said.
The phone calls
In police reports, the transcripts of Noah Gotbaum's phone calls are not time stamped.
It is unclear how many times he called the airport. The officials he spoke to are unidentified.
It is also unclear how much Noah knew about his wife's situation, though during at least one call he apparently knew she had been in contact with police.
"You're dealing with (a) medical emergency," Noah told an airport dispatcher. "And if they don't know that, they don't understand."
Members of the Gotbaum family declined to comment on the transcripts Thursday, saying they needed time to grieve.
Police and airport officials on Thursday refused to comment specifically on the transcripts. They have said that the officers who arrested Carol, and who later tried to save her life, were unaware of the family's calls.
"The officers had no knowledge of any of Ms. Gotbaum's personal issues," Sgt. Andy Hill said Wednesday. "They had not been apprised of any calls from the family to the airport seeking to locate Ms. Gotbaum."
Police have said that, had they believed she was a threat to herself, she would not have been left alone.
At least one officer who arrested Carol Gotbaum, Andrew Woyna, didn't know her name, according to the police report.
"After leaving her in the room for a while, three to four minutes, (Woyna) noticed she had quit screaming and thought that he might be able to determine her identity," the report said.
"He then went to the door and looked in at her."
By then, she was slumped on the floor of the room, shackled and unconscious.
The Maricopa County Medical Examiner has not yet released an official cause of death.
Throughout that Friday afternoon, Noah Gotbaum kept trying to get through to his wife.
Repeatedly, he explained the situation to dispatchers.
Many of their responses were similar:
"Well, I will pass this on to (the) lieutenant," one airport dispatcher told him when the two discussed family friend David Watson, who was expected to arrive to help Carol.
"And once again," the dispatcher said, "see what they will do and then when David Watson gets here we'll go ahead and direct 'em in the police office."
Noah Gotbaum pressed: "This is a medical emergency. They're not dealing with some lout who's just drank too much on an airplane. That's not what's going on here."
"OK," the dispatcher said.
"This woman is suicidal," he said. And they need to . . . deal with very kid gloves. They don't know what they're dealing with."

Police: Husband called after wife had died in airport
Casey Newton and Jahna Berry
The Arizona Republic
Oct. 5, 2007 08:02 PM
Noah Gotbaum made his first call to warn airport authorities that his wife was suicidal 70 minutes after she was pronounced dead, Phoenix police said this evening.
Police on Thursday had released transcripts of Gotbaum's phone calls inquiring about the welfare of his wife, Carol Gotbaum, that were placed on the same afternoon she was arrested and later found dead in a holding room.
But a police review of call logs showed his earliest call to Sky Harbor International Airport on Sept. 28 came at 4:39 p.m., a little more than an hour after she died, police said Friday.
Carol Gotbaum's cause of death is still under investigation and will likely not be available for at least two weeks, the Maricopa County Medical Examiner said.
The 45-year-old mother of three, who was on her way to alcohol rehabilitation in Tucson, was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge last week after causing a disturbance in the airport terminal.
