77 Apollo Jet Boat

i can not think of mine right now but will post later.
but who is your insurance with? b/c when i told dad that i was looking at some jets w/ 500+ HP, he told me that i better see if i can find someone that will cover the boat. when the adjuster came by to look at my Apollo dad was talking to him about other ppl w/ jets that are more souped up than mine. the adjuster was saying how it is very hard to find someone to cover a "fast looking" boat (i think he's full of it but who am i to say otherwise?).
also, what are ya'll paying annually for insurance? dad said he was paying less then 250.00 a year for his jet (for just liability....since 1977).
Cliffnotes: Who is your insurace provider? How much are you paying yearly?
Thanks,
William

You will find that your dad is right and so is the adjuster. (Sorry to break it to you) Basically, 500 HP and 55mph with thru transom exaust and a covered engine is what is insurable. You will find that most jet boaters do not have inurance because there are no providers that woll cover them at any price. 250 a year is great too by the way. My golf cart insurance is about that much. I would be extatic if someone would give me liabiity and theft. I will get the good parts back if I wreck it.

prior planning prevents poor performance... before I went boat shopping, I called my state farm agent of many years... she said three things we won't insure; over the transom pipes, blowers-tunnell rams-etc, and pickle fork-tunnell hull... so I pay like $275 per year and have the 454 and dominator jet drive... it goes 55 indicated not 70 or 95 but hey, the gray hair was earned prior to my boating experience.
your agent want to sell insurance so use their experience to help make the best choice for you.
if you're gonna have a hyperboat, or hot rod or whatever those darned kids call 'em these days, you'll either self insure (none) or pay through the nose at a specialty nonstandard (read real expensive) company.
Back in my sportbike days, I had bike buddies that would pay $300 a month for bike insurance... funny thing is after we would badmouth and talk down bike insurance one of our buddies would wad up (total) his bike and prove the underwriters right!
good luck, :boxed:

SO I DON't 'NEED' INSURANCE, THEN?
I JUST ASKED THIS QUESTION IN HOT SPOTS WEST, AND GOT LITTLE TO NO RESPONSE. 19 FOOT JET, 496 TWIN TURBO, 800+hp. EVERYWHERE I've CHECKED UP UNTIL THIS POINT HAS SAID NO WAY.

Progressive - $225/year plus I got a 20% discount this year because of a good driver's discount, no losses or tickets. The coverage is full and has a replacement value of $8,500.00 on the boat and $1,500.00 on the trailer.
I put thru transom headers on it just so it would be insurable.

I go through Hayden Boat and Yacht Ins. in Huntington Beach, CA... My boat is insured as an antique, high performance and so I pay about $430.00/yr for full coverage w/ medical, theft, personal items etc etc... It's insured w/ "restoration" receipts not market value.
Just play it straight w/ em' man... b/c if you bullshit on your app, and they find out what you really have when its pulled from the bottom of the lake they have every right to deny your claim

IF YOU FALSIFY THE INFO GIVEN TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY, THEY WILL NOT COVER THE CLAIM. IF YOU HAVE A SINGLE CARB MOTOR IT CAN BE EASIER TO FOOL THEM, BUT WHO IS GONNA BELEIVE A BLOWN OR TWIN TURBO MOTOR IS UNDER 350 HORSE?

My insurance in the end will cost me about 100hrs labor. Just makin sure I used the best I could afford and everything is leak proof. lol If my shiat sinks, unless it's in 8ft of water it's staying there. after all this I could'nt afford a recovery effort. Peace of mind that I used/assembled everything properly is the only insurance I'll have.

Newbie Question -
I'm interested in a 1973 Sanger Super Jet, stock 454 BBC. (single-carb, no tunnel ram). I'm thinking it originally came with logs. The hull is set up for thru-transom exhaust.
From the insurance perspective, should I be considering pulling a nearly-new set of Bassett OTT's and installing Bassett TTT's, or Lightnings, or ???
Cas, it sounds like it worked quite well for you.
Has anybody here considered the cost of covering their motor to solve a lack-of-insurance problem ?
Partner says "boat is insured", but I need to take a look at the paperwork and satisfy my concerns before getting more "involved".
Understand, I like the boat "as-is", but can't risk operating "self-insured".
Thanks,
Tommy

Another Newbie Question -
Looking at trucks for towing - hard to find a salesperson who can guess the weight of a Sanger Super Jet, 454BBC, Berkeley jet plus two axle trailer...
So I get the generic answer - "Oh yes, it will pull that boat".
Thanks,
Tommy

I would guess mabey 2500lbs to 3000lbs with trailer. Any full size will tow it as well as the v6 motors in the mid size trucks.

Just got my statement in the mail yesterday. I go through State Farm and pay around $560 a year. This is just for your basic coverage of medical and liablility. Also is for $8500 boat and $1500 trailer. I have ott headers and a tunnel ram,he asked the horsepower and i made a pretty honest guess. He said because of my lack of experience (in boating) was causing my rate to go up. I am thinking about upping my insurance, for replacement value only. Not worried about sinking but some A$$hole stealing it. It has happened to me before so i rather pay a lil now or alot later. ----Slack

The frustrating thing is that a 60 mph jet boat with OT headers is uninsurable...while a 95 mph bass fishing boat with outboard ain't no big deal.

State Farm, 14K on boat, 1K on trailer, about $540 per year. All my agent needed was some basic photos of the boat. They do however have a no flatbottom clause FYI.

Westmar marine insurance. I pay $277.00 a year for an 18 hallett valued at 12,000 replacement. I only paid $1100.00 a year for a 51 bluewater that we ran the piss out of!

About $300 a year, 10K total coverage. State Farm here as well. Not only do they not like flatbottoms, but their not real fond of OT headers. I was told by my agent, 50/50 chance of it being insured through them. I actually got lucky for a change and they covered it. He warned me if I make a claim, better make it a good one, as they'll fold my coverage like a K-Mart deck chair after the claim.....

I did have a claim after hitting Arizona. $7500. Still only 540 a year. I have been an overall customer of theirs for about 20 years though with minimal claims.

That's good to know. I've been with them for nearly 15 years, and minimal claims as well. I've got quite the list insured with them, and that may have something to do with it. They usually smile when I call or walk in, asking "what did you buy now'. Talk about multi vehicle discounts ! Here's the list:
2005 Suzuki LTZ400
2005 Kawasaki KFX400
2002 LT80
1997 PowerStroke Crewcab 4X4
1994 Honda Civic
1990 35' Holiday Rambler motorhome
1986 LT230
1980 10' snowmobile trailer (for the quads)
1979 F-150 4X4
1976 18' Sanger
1976 Ride-on trailer
1975 Trans Am
1968 Firebird Convertible
1967 Fairlane Hardtop
Not to mention our house, shop, rental, and umbrella policy. I don't think they can afford to drop me :crossx: :crossx: :crossx:
