I'm starting my winter project. 25 Eliminator Daytona. 509 cid,8.5 to 1CR, Edlebrock performer rpm #6155 aluminum heads, B&M 420 blower, 2 850 BG prepped holley blower carbs, CMI E tops.Planning on 5 to 6 lbs boost. Suggestions for cam requested. I want to turn it to 6000rpm . Note: I need a relatively smooth idle due to running a Black Hawk drive. It needs to be able to idle around 700 in gear or docking / trailer loading will be nuts. It already does near 9mph at idle with a 500efi in it.
OK motor gurus, whats the best cam choice for this combination and any guesses on HP and TQ #s?

498, 8:1 static, dual 750's, Canfield 350 cc heads, B&M 420, 9.5 Pds. Boost, Pump Gas.
Here's what I run and it runs perfectly.

It was a custom design by Dave Crower. Crower Cams. Just about everyone said that it would not be any good down low, would idle too high, overlap was too much, cam was way to big.... So being me, I ran it. I have never been happier with a cam. It idles under 700 in gear, 1100 out, no blower surge, no reversion issues, pulls like H$ll from the git go and never stops. Dock behavior is excellent. I ski with it, go to Catalina 35 Miles out in the ocean, race it and overall it's a ton of fun..... :D
Here's the link if you would like to read all the opinions B4 I ran it......

His Black Hawk will never survive shifting into gear at 1100.

I would recommend massaging the heads. Those heads respond very well to port work. Also I would change the valves out. With some REV Super and Inconel exhaust you will gain some power and reliability.
Cam profile will be based on combo, rpm range, and cylinder head flow, but as with most marine blower cams short duration and moderate lift will yield the best results and give you the lower rpm to shift that blackhawk drive.

What do you idle at now out of gear?
Do blackhawks have a problem with shifting @ that RPM while Bravo's do not? Please tell me why, Thanks.

I don't think 1100 is good on a brovo either

I've run these idle speeds for 8 years due to the cam profiles I run. Same drive 15 years total w/ no issues, never one repair. what is the issue? It doesnt hit especially hard when put into gear.

Listen to Chris he knows what he's talking about. He did my cam in a low boost 600cid and we made 1000hp/1000tq all in by 6000rpms and idles like a grocery getter on pump gas with his cam. He does what he says and stands behind his word. www.straubtechnologies.com
THANKS AGAIN CSTRAUB

Agreed, Chris does know of what he speaks, I was just looking for a little more rad and I'm sure he would have accomodated me if I had asked. He gave me all the time I wanted and gave good advice to me.:D

I think he is referring to Blackhawks having the counter-rotating props...shifting above 900 is very tough on the clutch, as that is alot of metal to get swinging?
My Bravos do not like shifting above 1,000. Is your tach correct?

Maybe B&D (BDMar) can answer the shifting at higher rpm.
Hard to beleive 15 years no problems and no repairs on a Bravo drive.

Tach is correct, only twisted an input shaft once when under full throttle I went through a muddy bottom. Changed the u joint and away we went. I've destroyed many stainless props with this drive. I always see on this sight people with Bravo problems, I guess I'm lucky or something. I grease the u joint every 2 seasons, change the fluid with quicksilver every season, have a drive shower and that's it! Other than that, nothing. Been shifting it over 1000RPM for years and years, once in a while it's hard to push it into drive or neutral. I have an extra drive only because of what I've read here and never needed it, it just sit's in my garage. It's a heckuva lot better looking than this drive. :D

The BH drive with twin 31's hits like a truck when shifting into gear. the boat nearly launches into the air :) it shifts so hard. I use an over ride switch so I can start in gear but sometimes, ya just gotta shift while running.

I am running a 509 ci with the same heads you are talking and a vortec. I am also at about 8.5 compression and run 9lbs @ 5k ft to 6k rpm on 91 octane. I will have to get my cam specs when I get home and let you know. It idles at 700 ish rpm out of gear.

I guess I can see that with twins. I would have to multiply my shift impact
X 2 to get what you are talking about as I run a single 32 on my bravo.
