Good luck!
I've heard nothing but horror stories about trying to get coverage for our little jet boats. The biggest problem seems to be with the pipes.

I know someone who ran over a kid on a jet ski. took him to court. Cost him a fortune

Duke:
do they have to be insured? No... but like 73sleek said, if you hurt or kill someone, or even if your boat gets stolen/damaged/wrecked/etc... then everything is out of your pocket, and it could mean your ass, especially if it involves someone else getting badly hurt

You might try "Leisure Craft" in Santa Ana (I think). They insured my old 19 ft Hallet that had an open engine with headers. I told them it was a 330 HP 454 jet (which it was). They didn't ask if it had headers, so I didn't volunteer; and I don't remember them asking for pictures.
Good luck, and yes you should get insurance, especially if you own your house or other assets of value that could be taken in a lawsuit.
Happy Boating Tim

Try Terheggen and Malone (800)223-6268 or Sea to Sea (800) 732 2732 ask for kurt limbo. They both insure jets.

I used to have AAA but let it expire at the end of last season. The plan was to get Progressive this season since the online quote I got was cheaper. Now Progressive won't insure over transom pipes. I called AAA back and the girl said there would be no problem. Not sure if they allow it or she was just ignorant. Another thing to keep in mind, if you can insure with a company that does all insurance (like AAA) you will save a lot by carrying all policies with the same company. I have both cars and the house with them.

Go back to AAA thats the only way to go in California. Thats all I use.

I also have triple A, BUT I now have an exclusion for the Parker strip, I'm not covered if I'm on the river between Parker Dam and Palo Verde Dam. Damn!

I work for my brother who is an Agent for State Farm. I know they will not insure a boat that has the engine exposed. There is too much liability for someone to get burned on the pipes and engine block. Really annoying when you have to turn some frie burningm nds away.

I am curious if the statictics really show exposed is more dangerous. Seems like the covered engines are the onces that always blow up after gas fumes collect under the hatch.

Now I have state farm insurance in WI and they even took pictures of the boat and sent them in to the home base, the word came back no problem!
Its about $28 a month thats for full coverage with a $9000 boat value and a $1000 trailer value.
I do have an exposed motor and OT pipes!
They also cover my motor with only a $250 deduct.
(Thats a cheap rebuild if you ask me!)
Just my 2cents

I wonder if it's different from state to state even though it's the same company? I've been with State Farm since I was 16 years old. No accidents or tickets (water or land) and I'm now 46. State Farm wouldn't insure my boat because it was a 1976 model. Their cutoff point was 1977. I see by your handle yours might be a 77 model? Maybe they gave me the straight scoop. Sure wish I had your coverage.

Yes my boat is a 77 model maybe your right about the year being a factor, I just am glad that if I have an accident on the water I might be dropped by the company after the settlement but at least whoever is injured wont take me to the cleaners!
I doubt however how many times I will be able to claim on the motor being broken though it would have to be a complete engine disaster for me to call the insurance man!

I USE PROGRESSIVE. THEY DID NOT LIKE THE SOUND OF JET BOAT BUT, WHEN I TOLD THEM IT WAS JUST A INBOARD OUTBOARD WITH NO PROP THEY SAID NO PROBLEM. I SENT THEM PICTURES AND GOT FULL COVERAGE INCLUDING FULL REPLACEMENT VALUE. MY BOAT IS A 1989 PLACECRAFT DAY CRUISER WITH A COVERED ENGINE.
