View Full Version : Should I use this intake???

I bought a 14-71 and other blower parts and got a intake with it all.
Looks to be a BBC tunnel ram intake that has had the top half cut off and turned into a blower intake.
Whoever did it, did a really nice job but I am wondering about 3 things.
1--the intake has no water provisions at the front and rear of the intake. The intake is cut short front and rear. I can make up block off plates or plates for water outlets. Not a big deal I am thinking?
2--the intake leaves the cam, lifters, push rods exposed. I would need a block off cover of some sort. Dont think I have ever seen one for a BBC????
3--there is no pop off block or burst panel. Really no where on the intake to machine in either a pop off or burst panel.
Should I make this intake work or E-bay it and go to a tented/raised intake?
I tried to put in pics as attachments but it wouldnt work.
Your thoughts???
Be good, Jim

If you decide to not use it I have 2 forsale that would work with your 1471.
A new polished or a lightly used satin.

Jim, if you e-mail me the pictures I can post them for you. I deleted the e-mail you sent me that had the pictures of the blower and manifold, and I'm having a hard time picturing the manifold.

Looks like it was made for a blower style EFI system.

Hey Jerry,
if what you are looking at are the bigger holes on top of the manifold. They are for a socket to go through to get to the manifold to head bolts.
Look again and you will see they get covered by the blower when it's mounted.
At least that's what I think you are looking at????

Yup, your right. They did nice work on it. Where did you get it at?
Maybe someone else will know. Ask Infomaniac he will know im sure.

Jim, it was my pleasure. One things for sure...someone took a lot of time to make that intake. How much boost are you planning on running? If it's a 14-71 on alcohol, I'd say you'll need a burst panel.

Adam,
I am planning on starting with 5 or so lbs. boost and working up to 15 lbs or so.
This will be the first Flatty that has this kind of power for me. I want to work my way up the HP ladder to gain exp.
Jerry,
I bought all this stuff from a guy in Brooklyn NYC and he was nice enough to never mention the lifter valley deal or the water outlet problem. All in all though, I got a good deal.
If I use this intake, I have to figure out how to cover up the lifter valley. And there is nowhere to put in a pop off of anykind.....
Be good, Jim

I have a "wizzard" manifold like the one you have-----I haven't ever put it on anything yet, just haven't put the motor together----I found a valley plate somewhere, and can't remember where----check with Dale Ishmaru out in california (usually has listing on dragboats.com classified)----he has had some in the past, and might still have one-----or make a request for one on "Racing Junk"-------if not, you might have to make your own----nothing fancy, just a plate-----make a cardboard template and take your time-----remember to measure the crank to blower drive centers, and use the pulleys that will fit in that length range---this manifold will set the blower a little higher than most "cast" manifolds, but about the same height as an "Indy" manifold

Odds are this was a race deal and they made a valley tray to go beneath it. That kept hot oil off the bottom of the manifold. The benefits are minimal but racers tend to lean toward all benefits in competition.
You'd have to make a valley tray with a distributor mounting boss on it...and make it so this manifold actually held the valley tray in place...then seal the valley tray with silicone seal and/or drill and tap your block on the ends.
Personally I have always felt that manifolds of this type do offer a performance gain from the straight runners/plenum and high port nozzle location. How much that gain is I dunno. But the theory is there for sure.
Another factor you would run into besides burst panel and water lcoation is this manifold is taller than per say a BDS or Littlefield tent floor. This may mean running smaller than "the norm" on pulleys (if chosing 8mm) or locating your idler different than the norm.
Prolly more trouble than you want to do to use this manifold. But I like the manifold. Just not your cup of tea I would imagine.
If you Ebay it...let me know.

Thanks blowngas for that info. The seller did mention wizzard but he really didnt know. I did a search for wizzard and manifold before and came up with nothing. Figured he didnt know what he was talking about.
Is the valley cover you have sheet metal or what?
Fiat, I never even go to the point of thinking about the dist mount. One more thing to fab up.
As to the height, can you explain needing smaller pulleys? I got 2 14mm pulleys (34-25) but the overdrive is way too much for my app. The idler might have to be moved and/or 2 idlers???
Bottom line, this thing is really cool but may be more trouble than it's worth.
I will send Adam a few more pics of the intake.
Be good, Jim

If you are going to run a lower boost, you can cut a hole in the plenum and install a pop-off valve easy enough. Just get in touch with one of the blower companies and they can tell you what needs to be done.
My manifold came with a burst panel and I made a plate to cover it and installed a pop-off valve. Easy to do.

It is nice work but I wouldn't bother with it. I would hate fabricating a lifter cover, adding water outlets and a pop off valve in case the motor backfires.
You could also run into a belt problem. That intake is higher then a stock blower intake so a different belt is required.
Buy a good used one that someone has in this post.

Thats what I would do, just go buy a new or used standerd one.
I bet you can find a good used one right off of the forums here.

I don't know how hard it would be to fabricate the valley cover, but many of the manifolds have to be drilled and/or cut to install pop-off valves. Is there a standard manifold height for blowers? I did not think there was. If a standard manifold is purchased it is one height, if the competition manifold is used it is another height, that is for each brand. I have an Indy BBC manifold that is taller than most competition manifolds, then we get into standard deck or tall deck. Then we go to using inter-coolers, and add that to each of the ones above. I think that is why the list of blower belts is so long. Sometimes there are too many options, and the one I need is not available. Way too much fun.

Your right about that for sure. Hard to get the right combo sometimes.
I had a hard time but got it right finally.

I ran into alot of problems getting a belt for my 8 mm pulleys. The selection of length is very limited and one was either too long and the next size too short. The jump was 3 inches between lengths in the 8 mm.
