I have a few questions for the Sanger gurus:
-Can someone please post some quality pics from the Sanger reunion that took place a few months ago pleeeeeease?
-Does anyone know real solid details on the Sanger Climax? Was this just one boat that Mr. Sanger made or was it a special model of drag boat?
-I have heard people use the term 13 rib or WHATEVER number rib sanger Hydro, can anyone shed any light on what this means? I see ribs on my sponsons but only a few NOT anywhere near 13 or whatever the magic number is.
-Drag hydro versus Ski hydro: mine has a bulkhead just in front of your feet, the back of the hull looks to be very flat and if the rudder is offset it's not by more than a inch or two.http://***boat.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=41234&stc=1&d=1192572138

drag hydro outboard steering

most ski hydro's have inboard steering (under the hull like a flatbottom v-drive)
but many have been changed to outboard steering.

Sanger Boats was founded by Jack Davidson out of Sanger, California in 1954. The "ribs", I believe are down the center of the deck in between the sponsons? Some hydro guys will come on here at give you the skinny on it.

The five ribs are located in the center on top of the bow in between the sponsons. Alot of peeps refer to this as the "drag hydro" but in reality it is a smaller version for the regular hydro. My boss was a racer back in the 70's and 80's they just called it a junior or little hydro back then. Outboard steering is what is really needed for high speed drag racing because the a$$ of the boat will rise out of the water and you will loose your steering at high speeds this is true in both versions.:D :D :D

Haven't I read on here that the no rib was the lake hydro, the 5 rib was the drag hydro, and there was a 7 rib lightweight hull that was rare?

I believe the climax hulls were similar to the 5rib except the air traps went all the way to the back ,very noticable from the back.

i went to the sanger reunion. i figured there would be more there but not much showed. few rare 26 ft tahoes and some beautiful works of art. my favorite is the AQUAHOLIC i drew all over that boat. before i go on where did her get the longer rudder. i have a 82 hydro and i think it would help. anyway. I spoke to a guy who works for sanger still and gave me some insight maybe you already know. the CLIMAX hull that was there is not a orig its a new hull , however made from old molds. sanger still has all yes all of the molds for boats they made accept the sanger 25 wich was a spectra and was a flop. the mold was brought out of storage and needed some minor repairs then poped a new hydro 5 rib which was a 75 mold . the big hype about the molds getting destroyed is somewhat true but it was the second and thrirds the best are still there. many hot boat people are trying to get the hydro rebuild but some a$$hole attorney mentioned the word liability and so far its squashed. I dont know it there are any orig climax hulls out there hopefully if so id buy one. im looking for now one of the old tim morgans flying machines hydro when he used the sanger in alcohol. he is a family friend also. its amazing i explained why is every other hydro rebuilt but the sanger????

From what I recall there is one raised rib with a recessed area on either side of the rib in the center...
 I only got ONE rib... P.S. That's my son in the boat, he can't stay out of it...

It depends who you talk to at Sanger, as to which molds they still have. The guy I talked to over a year ago said the CLIMAX hull and a few others (he didn't state which ones) were the only molds left. That new CLIMAX hull you saw at the reunion sits in the gift shop at the Sanger factory in Fresno. I doubt Sanger's unwillingness to produce the old hulls again has anything to do with some attorney and liability. I think Sanger just doesn't care to get in that market again. They sell plenty of new boats to keep the place open and making money. The guy I talked to at Sanger said they are busy with the new boats and don't have any desire to bring the old hulls back to market. It's a shame. Sanger has a great following and could capitalize on supporting the old boats and new boats at the same time.

true like i said info i got could be bullsh.. but i dont know i havent seen the molds. i dont know why they dont considering the sanger is not one of the greatest ski boats compared to the big names out there. i think they should do a special order on the old boats. i send the guy a e mail to see it i can get pics of the molds i was told they are not kept on site.

Alcoholic (http://www.schoutenranch.com/video/alcoholic.wmv) is a pretty cool ski hydro. Definately overkill but cool factor is a 10.

Sanger may change their minds. If you look on Craigslist, there are a LOT of newer ones for sale... I've called a few and it's either they sell them quick or loose their homes. Even used some want $45K and I'll bet they are loosing money then. There may be a new market for smaller "V" and Jet drive boats to come back to. Get a nice Hydro or "V" hull for around $10K and then $5K for engine and interior and you've got yourself a nice little hot rod.
Just my 2 cents. I think it would be a good idea.

that is a sweet vid....that boat is awesome. Can those hydros withstand much wake?

I always herd if was for liability reasons. It would be really cool to see some new boats of the older style, but at the same time it just wouldn't be the same. I don't know......I would like them to reproduce hardware....that would be cool.

I think they all got the Thunderbird syndrome and just had to start making things bigger. If Ford had kept the "T" Bird a direct competition to Corvette, they would have been better off, but no!!! they kept making it bigger and bigger and then had to come out with the Mustang to compete. The same goes for the boats, they saw more and more skiers due to the Florida ski comps and so they built their boats for that. Just my opinion.
We are better off that they don't make our boats any more, it makes ours increase in value as time goes on. You watch the demand go up as the ROLL-BAR boats get sold off and people still want boats but can't afford to go $50K into something used so little time out of the year, unless they live in Florida or Arizona.

Awesome Video. I love the hydro's. Shovel nose is my favorite. I'd probably be too much of a wus to stand on the throttle though :D . Then again, I might bury it and forget to let off :jawdrop:
There seems to always be a TON of newer tournament ski boats for sale. Yet, still more are (or have been) flying off the lots. Seems like most hold their value well. But, who wants to spend $5k less for a used one with over 100 hours on it, when you can get a new one for that extra $5k. The way I see these new boats cared for, I wouldn't even look at a used one unless the price was way less than a new one is going for.
I'm not sure the prices of these old flats and hydros will ever get too high. The market is very small. Not many families are looking to buy a flatbottom or hyrdo. Plus, the cost to restore an old boat is quite high. Most parts, brackets, etc. are not "off-the-shelf". A lot of stuff is custom fabricated to rig an old boat. There's no "shop manual" or books on how to set-up a boat, it's all in people's brains. That keeps the market small and prices stable. Families can go spend $15k to $20k on a Bayliner or Reinell (sp?) that has the boom on it and not have to worry about a medium-sized wave sinking the boat. Not everyone has to spend $50k on the tournament ski boat, which at those prices, I think it's crazy. Easier for people to pluke down $50k than to restore a boat!
