Authorities say at least two people were killed and 16 injured Tuesday afternoon when a blinding sandstorm caught dozens of vehicles in a highway pileup in the high desert north of Los Angeles.
L.A. County Fire Inspector Ron Haralson says two of the injured were in critical condition after the crash that left vehicles scattered across Highway 14.
The pileup was reported at about 1:40 p.m. The National Weather Service says winds were gusting up to 55 miles per hour during the sandstorm.
Anthony Valdespino told said "Everybody just came to an abrupt stop." He said he heard brakes screeching all around him.
The weather service issued a dust storm warning for the Antelope Valley, cautioning that blowing dust could reduce visibility to near zero.

The news showed a video of the sandstorm on the freeway and it was pretty wild. Could barely see the car in front.
