I'm headed this direction next week and thought I'd post a vid.
A few of the SD long range boats have had a hell of a time getting fish to the boat without losing their fish to the "taxman" aka great white shark. Some of the boats have reported 90% of the fish have been "chomped" before being brought to the boat.

I have seen some big ons at the island. More and more are showing there. They know the long range fleet is a easy meal. They look like friggin submarines in the water.

One of the advantages to the Mexican fishing boats, they will eliminate the "tax-men", or "line lizards" without hesitation, unlike the U.S. skippers that live by the rules, nothing worse than fighting a fish for 10-15 minutes, and the fight gets easier and easier, cause when you get it to the boat, half the fricken fish is gone!!!

I know they're in the Channel Islands. I'd guess yes to Catalina.
I've caught many makos in between Catalina and San Clemente and makos will bite ya if they're hungry enough.

It's a pretty big ocean. There are sharks everywhere. Every time I have gone deep sea fishing on a tuna boat we see them.

OK... If I go in the ocean now, I am going to need a bigger boat!

Sharks, Rogue waves........fock the ocean. I don't swim anywhere that puts me on the bottom of the food chain. I'm staying on the beach. :D

We pulled a 300 thresher 8 miles out of Oceanside last summer. When we made it back to the docks the boat next to us claim to have seen a great white. They had a 6 ft mako they were trying to land when Megaladon reportedly bit the bitch in half!
If that shiat happened while out on our 32 footer, I'd assume the fetal position in the gally and piss myself while mumbling incoherently.

On the ten day trip you still have many options to head a further south. Still lots of time between now and the time you leave, all you need is something to push the warm water north and game on. Good luck, post a report when you get back.
