I have a 7.4 GSI Volvo in my boat with about 150 hours on it and was wondering about how long it should last. What kind of life should I see out of that motor with Royal Purple oil changes every 20ish hours? When I do have to rebuild the motor what am I looking at cost wise? Is that going to be like a couple grand or like 10 grand to refresh it. When the motor get's like 500 - 1000 hours on it do I need to do a complete rebuild and if so what will that cost approx? Any info would be appreciated!

How long the motor lasts mechanically is going to depend on how you treat it. If you are wondering how tired it is, I would pay for a leakdown test- that will tell you how tight the holes are.

 How did you ware a 7.4 out in 150 hrs? It is possible to run them somewhere between 500 and 5,500 rpm's :D

I've had several 7.4 mercs and gotten well over 500 hrs with no prob's. In my 370 DA I think we were over 700 hrs. BUT I don't drive my boats like I stole them :D

I'm not saying that my motor is worn out now. It was just more of a general question. This is my first boat that I owned and wasn't sure about the longevity of them since they see much higher RPM's. One of the main reasons I'm interested though is I would like to buy a used 8.1 GSI because they have about 45ish more HP and would make my boat go as fast as I want it to. So with buying a used motor I wanted to "refresh" it a little before using it. Just something I was thinking about.

One of those should go 10-20 years no problem.

I'm averaging about 100 - 150 hours per year. 10 years equal 1,500 hours.....that will be a tired ass motor by then and besides I pray I don't have that boat for 10 years anyways.

best advice right there;)
I am learning with my VP, every 100hrs or less....WATER PUMP!!!!! Water pump , water pump;)
It's a VP....I doubt it's even fully broken in yet:D
BTW HH.. found my prop....apparently very rare.....14/3 x 28p SST straight from Volvo (very long blades).....waiting on pitch blocks to come in, S/B about a 30p when done...got it Knifed and cupped so far........works great runs out to 5300 RPM

I would make sure that 150 hours is correct because your boat was made in 1998-1999 and 150 hours seems low.
