In my opinion, When your talking about lake boats that have at least two seats, have the ability to pull a skier, and can carry enough fuel to run for at least 20 miles, Then anything over 80 mph is fast. :D

I was thinking 80 and over also. :D

(Of course when you get there it still won't be fast enough.)
There are jet boats that can carry enough fuel to go 20 miles?!! WTF I have never had one of those.

I think its aways changing, 80 in my jet used to seem really fast, now I guess I'm just getting used to it and want more. I guess its ok for having all the crap I have in it and using it for fishing and skiing.
I only get about 65 now without the N2O, which makes it seem slow when compared to running on the bottle, thats why I'm building a new motor to try and get over 80 before N2O.
But then I'll probably hit the bottle and run 90 and then be bored with 80 when I'm not using the N2O.
can't win,

The fuel economy at 3000rpm / 36 mph is not too bad.

Here's my thought...
Slow: 55 and below
So-so: 55-60
Average: 60-65
Above Average: 65-70
Fast: 70-80
Very Fast: 80-95
Racer: 95+
As far as I know, these are hard fast rules.
But then, what is a "lake boat?" And what lake are we talking about...Lake Powell?

Mine wont be fast until it runs 100mph with no power adders, then it gets the 8-71 or Cheater kit. It runs 90-91 with full fuel (48 gal.) and me and wife, good for ALL DAY on the lake. Was out at Lake Plesant,AZ. yesterday most of the day, RADARED EVERYTHING that moved, the fastest I saw was a bass boat with a clamp-on at 63 mph picking on everyone. I gave him the short info course on jets! Everyone here ya talk to thinks they have the fastest thing, but the Stalker don't lie. And for those of you locals that think I haven't RADARed you,I have TWO boats! TIMMINATOR

A friend of mine has a bone stock challenger jet, I mean bone stock hull & pump! No ride plate, loader, droop etc... He is running a 12-1 468 with some oval port heads (minor pocket porting etc, flat tappet cam, tunnel ram with 2 850's. He used my gps last weekend & it ran 80.6 in 100 degree weather! I was fuggin shocked! That would be a fast or quick river boat in my opinion... :) & yes it had a bow light! :D

F N FAST: did I misplace a comma, or did I not make myself clear? The boat runs 90+, and we run it all day on 48 gallons of gas, we usually cruise at about 35-40 MPH and I have never refueled at the lake. If we do Bartlett,we arrive at 8:00 and leave at about 1:00 (thats DAYTIME for you nit pickers),and usually don't even need to switch tanks. The boat is a 21 Daytona w/AA impeller and inducer and its EFFICIENT! Big Block Chevy built in my garage,(over 500")and it runs in the mid 50's/low 60's on the primarys(SINGLE CARB). Mike C. and Brian F. know the boat well, Hotfish and a few others have seen it from the outside. Come on out and play, it's a back yard-garage built motor with a stock pump in the stock position, and the bottom is stock too. Any more questions? TIMMINATOR :D :D :D

Anyone know if California GPS's are calibrated at the Dyno shops? Sorry,no offense, I couldn't help myself! I DID notice that the GPS and Stalker RADAR gun don't agree unless the speed is constant for a while, sometimes the GPS is lower, sometimes higher. Then it will agree after a while, the RADAR gun is continously right, I'm sure thats why ***boat uses a Stalker for speed tests. Just my opinion and I could be wrong, or not! Hey Tim, I must have misunderstood your post. I'm sure that never happens.
Ok that's more like it. Kinda the same deal here with me. I've seen your boat on Pleasant, you've seen mine.
I agree with your statement on the GPS vs. radar, can't beat the gun for sure. If you go Sat, bring your radar, I'd be real curious as to what I'm really doing.

The main variable in the GPS units is the update time.
Some hand held units only update once per second where a dash mounted Nordskog unit will update at 4 times per second or more depending on how you have it set.
Quite a variable for a drag boat but not a problem in a lake boat that could be held at top speed for several seconds.
When I raced last year on a 1000' course my gps said I went 101 mph but the time slip said I went 104.7 so I liked that better. :D

MAXIMUS

I tested 2 gps units over the weekend. Both were magellans, 1 was a gold (mine) & the other was a platinum! We suspected the platinum was not working correctly & bingo we were right. The up dates were lagging significantly! My gps shows no lag, but the platinum showed a second or 2 of lag. The end result was that if you didn't hold top speed on the platinum for an extra second or two then you would get about a 2.5 mph slower reading on the tatle tale! Other than that the real time speed was excatly the same. I believe that I would put more faith in a gps than a radar gun. Guns can & will give different readings when the beam is at different angles...

Wow.... Maybe a bit too much Testosterone in this thread  But what the hell, I'll play....er, my boat does 118mph with 2 full tanks of gas, 5 kids, 3 dogs, 6 ice chests, and Towing another boat in eek! :D :D
Just kidding folks. I just love these kind of threads....my boat will do...... LOL
Well, the question of how fast is fast for lake boats would have a logical answer. It would all depend on what the individual boat operator felt at the time, no matter what the speed is.
My boat will do 46 mph and that is fast enough for me :p :D :D
