Press Release
The Southern California Speedboat Club presents:
“2006 Spring Regatta & 45 SS APBA National Championships Circle Boat Races”
Saturday & Sunday March 4 & 5, 2006
Lake Ming, Bakersfield, CA
The Southern California Speedboat Club (S.C.S.C.) is proud to present two exciting days of Championship Circle Boat racing at the premiere race course for powerboat racing on the West Coast at Lake Ming.
Join S.C.S.C. in putting on this prestigious American Power Boat Association (APBA) sanctioned event. Race fans will be treated to two exciting days watching championship circle boat racing.
Come and see some of the best boat racers in the country vying for a APBA National Championship title in the highly competitive 45-SS tunnel boat class. Also, the return of the bad blown K Racing Runabouts to Lake Ming after a 5 year absence.
Fans can expect to see a variety of inboard flat bottom and “V” bottom classes like Super Stocks, Round 2 action for the Western Pro Stock Series, Round 2 of the Grand National Racing Series.
The Cracker Boxes are the oldest continuous class of racing boats in the APBA, whose roots and hull style date back to the late 1930’s. The class still employs a driver and rider as these “hard chine” flatbottoms will be “popping” and “skipping” down the straightaway at speeds over 100 miles per hour.
Defending National Champion Steve Tustison - P74 “Hotwire”, from Huntington Beach CA will face a contingent of hard charging boats led by veteran Hall of Champion inductee Danny Mang driving for Mark Conavay in the P55 “California Cracker” and local Bakersfield owner and driver Ron Sherrin, P-10 “The Wood Box” Crackerbox.
Next, Formula Light Tunnel Boats (SST-45) can be seen pulling more than 4 G’s in the turns with their highly maneuverable hulls that trap air and essentially “fly” the boat almost completely out of the water. This class, led by the defending 2005 Western Formula Light Series Champion, Warren West of the West Brothers racing team, from Manteca, CA will face a throng of seasoned veterans and some great newcomers, including 2006 Rookie of the year Jason Williams #10 from Alta Loma, CA who has had great success at Lake Ming. This is their warm up to their Round #1 race which will take place on April 22 & 23 at the Bluewater Resort & Casino in Parker, AZ.
For those that harken back to the yesteryear of boat racing, they will enjoy the meticulously restored racing boats in the Nostalgia Flatbottom, Nostalgia Endurance and making its debut the newest Nostalgia classes… the Nostalgia Jet class. Many of these restored race boats have the original equipment and the attention to detail is sure to please the eye both on and off the water.
Let’s not forget the PWC Endurance Sprint racers featuring the 2005 APBA Endurance Champion and Yamaha Factory R & D rider Mike Follmer, Fountain Valley, CA #1 who has his eyes set on another National Championship.
Also, on hand will be the limited outboard hydroplanes and runabouts to provide close ‘deck to deck’ racing action!
All racing classes will be vying for APBA National points and hoping for their chance at victory at legendary Lake Ming.
So put on your sunscreen and soak up the sun while enjoying some of the best circle boat racing in the country.
Gates open at 8:00 a.m., Racing starts at 9:30 a.m. both days, and the admission is FREE. Spectators are asked to park on the East side parking lot as the pit parking is reserved for the racers.
