I am suddenly addicted to sand toys again. :) It has been about 15 years since I have been on anything. My pops bought a new Yamaha YFZ 450 and it is a mother ****ing machine! I was instantly hooked.
What does everyone have? What do you like? what is good what is bad? I am seriously thinking of picking up another YFZ 450, even though my old man told me I can use it whenever I want, I just think it would be fun to go riding with two.
Lets talk some quads! :)

Can't go wrong with the YFZ 450. Best stock quad on the market. My wife has the 660 Raptor and loves it. The new model of the Raptor is a 700 and it is fuel injected. Whatever you go with, go YAMAHA!!!!

I have a 660 Raptor, but I want to get a 450 this season. The Raptor is very top heavy and heavy in general. Don't let displacement fool you b/c I think the 450s are the same if not faster. 2001 raptors are known for having the tranny blow up due to a poor design that was corrected in 2002. I am leaning towards a used Honda or Yamaha 450 for myself.

A good friend of mine on the boards, told us about the Yamaha 450 before we bought it, he was right it seems. I have been doing alot of reading and it seems the Yamaha sits on top of most everything out there, even the bigger cc set ups. The thing I like is it is sporty as can be. Everything is like butter, the shifting, the suspension, the braking, it is like the perfect quad.
How does the Honda 450 compare? any opinions?
I am thinking of picking up a used 450YFZ and then maybe a 250 for the wife. Yamaha have a good 250 also?

If you want a 450, get the Suzuki. It has been killing the yami up the hill with similar mods.
I dont think you are too big, so a 450 will be perfect for you. For myself, I chose the Raptor 700. It is the fastest stock bike there is that I have sen. If you take the airbox lid off and remove the pea shooter (spark arrestor) for the stock exhaust, the bike plain rrips in stock form. With some dual pipes, intake and fuel controller, it can beat all 450s with the smae mods. The Honda 450 is a turd.
I would race the hill at Glamis/Buttercup/Gordons for hours each day with that bike. I would beat modified Banshees, 450s, everything with similar mods.
The heaviliy modified bikes would pull from me, but I was way impressed with the 700 over anything I lined up against.
The 700 is alos a ton better than the old 660. All of the top heavy issues were corrected with the 700. With it also being fuel injected, it will adjust to altitude and run strong at higher elevations. The 700 also has reverse. My fist quad didn't then once I had reverse, I cant live without it.
Find a used Suzuki 450 with a pipe and cherry bomb controller and it will frickin rip. They are fuel injected also.

she went for a ride up the street on the 450 and said "now that's fast"

For a sport bike, the YFZ450 all the way. I absolutely love mine and with some minimal modifications, you can spank 99% out there. Last time out, the only two bikes that beat me up olds was BoardsmnJ's bike and a full drag Banshee with NO2. :)
The raptors are very nice bikes, but for me they are just too big. I like sitting down lower and not being so top heavy. They do have reverse though so that is very nice.
I do have to say though, RevnDave's quad is a SMOKING deal for what it is! I would seriously look at that before going out and buying something new. His bike is already done up and is super clean!

As the hubby already stated, he has a suped up YFZ450(513) and I have a Raptor 700. Before we bought mine, I wanted a 450 too. His bike is a fricken rocket. Luckily, he did not listen to me and got me a 700 instead because I am sure I would be injured on a regular basis if I rode the 450. :D
I think riding the 450 is a little more work. The 700 is all cushy and comfy and cruises.

I have the 700 Raptor. Great bike. Stays up close with the YFZ450 going up comp at Dumont. The YFZ450 are bad a$$. If you like smaller bikes, the 450 is the way to go. I personally like the bigger bike.

Mine's pink. Oh and a 700 :)
How does the wife ride? I rode my sisters 250 and couldn't deal... the wife may love it and need to step up rather quickly so you may wanna consider that. the raptor is more of a "tank" than the 450, just depends on your riding style i guess... (i tend to ride the chairs more than the bike... LOL) :D

RAPTOR 700
Great power! If the yfz450's haven't been beat by a Raptor then it's only time :D
I had chosen the Raptor over my YFZ450. Why? Because I'm a little taller, 6' 2", and the Raptor just feels more comfortable to me. The 700 is fuel injected and has the same front suspension as the 450. I personally ride dunes the most, so I just sit back and haul ass. And Yamaha took all the problems out of the 660 and fixed them on the 700.
If I was going to ride MX I would have kept the 450. But the 700 is no joke in the power department. I can literally cruise down to about 5-10mph in 4th gear and just hold the throttle open and it comes back up to power in a few seconds. With dual exhaust and a programmer (since you can't rejet fuel injection) you're looking at about 50hp and 42lbs of torque.

TTR is a fun little bike. My wife used to ride one of those around Ocotillo Wells alot. Then in Glamis she couldnt balance and she rode a friends Suzuki LTZ 400. I was dickin around on the ttr out in Ocotillo and blew out the front forks jumping it. (goes to show fat guys dont belong on womens bikes too!) :D

haha, you might be right, but Quads are fun and alot easier to ride, plus you dont get hurt as much. My Dad had a Husky 400 stroked and built up in the days and everyone used to get hurt on that thing. I was dumped off the back at about 65mph and will never forget that.

Exactly right.
My Raptor 700 made 52 HP on the dyno with the LTE duals, trinity programmer, and K&N exhaust set up.
On the same dyno, a yfz with a cam mod, curtis sparks racing pipe, and filter set up made 49 HP.
The Raptor is a faster bike is both riders are equal up comp hill. I raced the hill each trip until my arms about fell off. My Raptor was hard to beat. I would win about 80% of the time and I raced everything I could with exception to 80HP+ Banshees.

Here is another quad question. My son just got a Z50 Suzuki Quadsport. He took it out his first trip ever riding (he is 8) and has absolutely out grown the bike (power wise) he keeps it pegged to the floor. The 90s we sat him on were just a bit too big for him. I think the handling on the little Z50 is fine, he is ok with that. Anyway to get some more power out of a LTZ50 Suzuki?

I have the honda 450. Very happy with it. Our friends have yamaha 450's. They're pretty equal. I think the new Kawi's and the suzuki's are the way to go. Chaparell had the Kawi's for under 6k a couple of weeks ago.
I'm not much of a sand guy. I like back woods trail riding and the honda seems to have a better power band for that type of riding. It probably has more to do with the rider than anything else.

they always do that until they go over the bars once, you can restrict the horse power of the 90 until he grows into it.

I'm in the same boat(wink wink) right now, cant make up my mind on 450 yfz or the 700 raptor, but out off all the quads, these 2 are what everyone raves about.
I want to use it on the dunes 80% of the time, and they say the 700 has the torque you need out there, but the 450 just comes into play when I go out trial riding and now i hear theres a track here in Riverside.
Overall, I dont think I want one to race out in Glamis, but to just have more fun with it, and so far I hear the 450 is the one
I'll prolly be going down this week to pick one up.. buddy of mine works at a smaller retail shop, lets go down there & get better deal since were picking up 2 of them.....

The Zuki Z50 is held back by the dual circuit rev limiter.
It's a proprietary rev limiter to just the z50, nothing yet avail to replace it with.
You can re-jet, re-pipe ect ect, and the rev limiter will hold the z50 back so you'll gain nothing.

^Maynard a month later on his Z90. Great transition^
We pulled Maynard off his Z 50 and put him on the Z 90 last year. Great transition. The z90 is smaller than most other 90 cc quads.
The Yamaha Raptor 250 is all new this year and is an excellent 250. I'd take it over the honda 250 which is another fine 250 quad that got many improvements last year.
For a little more money:
My wife rides the Kawi KFX 700, and it's perfect for chicks, it's steamer and you can really grind them down on the price.

The Yami YFZ 450 is still the king of the dunes.
The Honda 450 you need the power up kit installed.
The Honda 450 though a good seller, is eclipsed by the Yami YFZ 450.
Look for the YFZ 450 to have FI and improved suspension in the next year.
Jury still out on the Kawi 450. Kawi slow to bring performance parts to market.
Raptor still too bulky for my riding tastes.

My buddy has the new Kawasaki KFX450R, with the computer mod, and exhaust and he smokes thoughs 700 Raptor's in the dunes and on dirt.
The 450's are a much more stable bike than the raptors in my opinion.

There's alot of people that have raced something faster than it, and have won and tell the tails. It's called Benchracing ;)
Just from dyno proven facts, because I have worked on several Trophy Winning 450's. With the same rider talent, and weight. The Raptor 700 will beat any 450 in acceleration and top speed. The 700 literally has so much torque you have to shit it as fast as you can, that machine does not like high RPM.
Stock yfz 450= 39.5hp
Stock Raptor 700= 42.5
Piped and jetted YFZ= 45-46hp (with cam mod)
Piped and Programmed 700= 48-50hp
Stock pipe with air lid off, and spark arrestor removed on 700=46.5hp
And in all the dynos the Raptor made consistantly 10lbs more of torque than the Yfz450, I would say that compensates for the HUGE amount of 40lbs heavier that the 700 is over the YFZ.
All the dynos were done on the same dyno, but not in the same day.
BUT The best advice would be to sit and try to ride any bike to see which feels the most comfortable.
The main reason people bag on the 700's is because they haven't been out as long as the YFZ's.
That's the same things Banshee's owners used to say when the YFZ 450 came out, until it had proved itself with time.
Good luck :)

so no one has heard anything about the new KTM's???? 525 and 450. they're real ktms not just in name. they are the only true race ready quad out right now. when you buy one you can literally tear off the price tag and take it to the races.
this would be the quad i bought if i didn't have one:

Get what fits do you want to ride it or hill race it?
Its funny reading how everyone owns either the 450s or raptor700s and they all say they are faster than others.700s vs 450svs banshees, stock 450 beats a modifed raptor700,stock raptor beats modified 450s,etc.
truth is they will not beat a 2 stroke of the same size ccs!:D hell some even half the size.Rider skill has to do with it and if a good rider on a built 450 goes up against a built banshee or atc with an esr motor who cant ride i hope he does beat the banshee or atc and that the atc ,banshee rider gets some more skills.:D

No they won't beat a two stroke of the same cc's.... that's because 4 strokes have to work twice as hard... so you double the cc's to make up for it ;)

I just bought the suzuki ltr 450, fast ass hell stock, but get the Dasa pipe, Fuel Atv intake, with a pcIII, and add 10 HP!!;) The other selling point is the wide beefy suspention! no need to spend the extra cash for the wider Aarms!! Killer deals on the 07s.

I used to have a 2005 660 Raptor. I had never owned a quad before and thought I'd give it a try. It was ok. I had a Yosh pipe, nerf bars, proflow air intake, it and it hualed ass and was very reliable, but I still liked my WR450F and my Rhino alot better. Quads aren't for me, I can go so much fast on my bike. I'm more of a two wheeler person anyway.

Dont get me wrong the 4 strokes are nice are are the main power choice these days.for a quad these days thats the only choice you get.My brother has the 700raptor with enough in suspension and shocks to literally out run mostly any quad thru the whoops but his motor aint workin as hard a s 450s is either.
The thing that makes me laugh are the ones who think that the 4 stroke will last forever with low maintainance the 450s are race track bikes and when a top end goes it aint going to be a cheap fix vs a 2 stroke.
I still have an 85 atc 250R only done the top end once a 90 dollar job total but it still has 200 pounds of compression not bad for a bone stocker.Oh has a pipe thats it:D But plan on some porting right now it will give a 450 hell on hill race just depends who gets the leave. But i want a cr500 for a duner

I've got an '88 250r an '87 250r with 310 kit and an '05 Honda 450...trx310r is by FAR my favorite dune bike hands down! :D Last weekend was a freakin' blast!
Yeah, the last couple of years, I've been kicking around the idea of a CT Racing 310 kit for it, but since I got my CR a few years back, its been more wifey's bike and the way my wife rides, she doesn't need any more power. I guess I taught her well....either full throttle or nothing! :D

Raptor 700 for me, my opinion is if you ride track than get the 450 but for Glamis and Desert the 700 is the way to go. I have raced a few 450's and never lost. I have a pipe, intake and programer.
Good luck, whatever you get im sure you will have fun and convince yourself it is the best.

Sometimes it's the crowd ya run with.
Most I know that sold their 2 wheelers did because no one to ride with anymore, not because they favor quads over Bikes.
I'd buy a YZ 450 tomorrow if I was runnin with a MX crowd. But they all sold them for quads, or suffered serious injuries that they can no longer ride.
It's apples and oranges compairing 2 to 4 wheelers.
It's all good if it's outdoor motorsports and you're a rider, not a spectator.
We're lucky in the USA the average Joe can afford to ride.
In Europe, it ain't so easy to afford to do such offroad motorsports like here.
Sure plenty of fine pros come from Europe, but the average Joe is priced out of the sport.
It's all good.

it looks like your mind is made up.....you are most likely going to buy the 450yfz.....I love mine.....IT is fast fun sleek sporty....and handles great. ....remember you are the one ridding it and not every one else, so you have to like it ........in a side by side....with a 450/700.....the 450 was quick....and the 700 was fast.....and I have hung with the 700,s it also depends on the rider..
