Anyone with a 460 where is your timming set?Is it the same as factory settings, I wouldnt think so but need to know.

Harman and Hardin set the initial timing at 10 degree BTC. However the total advance setting is more important to set at no more than 36 degrees .

I think mine is set to 36 degrees at 4500 rpm.

As long as your engine starts easy, just set the total advance at 36 over 3000RPM .The initial timing for 460's is usually set at 6 degree btc for cars ,but 10 degree was the norm for jetboats.Smooth idle at between 800-1000rpm with healty cams.

no i would set it at 10 at idle (inital) and then you check your timing again at like 3000 you should have 36 no more with a stock 460 ! good luck this is the best way to get soem extra rpm out of your boat! wink

I have mine set at 13 or 14, I dont' know where it advances to above idle, but my boat runs strong for what it has. As long as you run good gas, you could probably put the timing up to 14 -16 btdc. The more timing, the more responsive it usually is and the more power it will make.

his motor is a stock motor if he runs that much advance it will be hard for him to start the boat! i would try to stay under 15 ! the reason that they can run more is there cam will allow it and for 77 its his compression! good luck!

true hj that is why i stated with my combo.but most others i talk to stay at 34-36 total.

I have a Mod. built BBF 460, I detuned the timing bak to 11 degress initial timing & 37 total. This provides easy starting & decent performance, The references I have are contradictory, Motors auto repair 1975 says 14 degrees, The distributor shop spec sheet (rebuilt by previos owner) also indicates 14 degrees. The Harmon block plate indicates 10 degrees. You need to decide what you want the engine to do, reliability or performance. Another thing to consider when running over 38 degrees total timing is detonation, you may need to run a higher octane or additive.

I have a 460 and I have the distributor locked out and the timing is set at 35 degrees. I'm running aluminum heads which really helps get the heat out of the cylinders and keep it from detonating. When I bought the boat it had iron heads and the timing was set at 39 degrees. I tore the motor down and the 2 back pistons were hammered due to detonation. I experimented alot with the timing and the motor loved around 40 degrees but that is just way to much. I would recommend between 34-36. Hope this helps.
