Looking for a digital camera. Nothing fancy. Something cheap but produces a reasonable quality image. Used just for camping, boating and some family shots. Maybe a camera at Best Buy, Target, Staples or Office Depot. Which ones have the best bang for the buck...not too expensive with the good features..

What the hell kind of request is this? You want best and cheap? Come on. Its no secret, you get what you pay for. Cheap, get one at Wal Mart for about $80, but it eats batteries (AA) like crazy, and takes ok pics. When it breaks, throw it away and buy another. What kind of media do you want to use? Do you want it to fit in your pocket, or are you willing to get a bag and carry it? I wanted to get one for the wife and opted for great pics, decent price, plenty of features and uses an SD card. Its the Kodak Z612, which is about 2 years old and was $350. My real camera is a Minolta X700 with all the goodies and gadgets, filters and lenses.

I just returned from Best Buy after going toe to toe with the Manager over a $150.00 return fee.
I won the arguement,, but it shouldn't have happened.
HP told us to return the computer we bought today because it was defective.
Sooo, purchases like this will be from COSTCO from now on.
Better return policy.
Not as great as it once was,, but it's better than Best Buy.
Costco is based in Idaho isn't it?
They have a great camera selection.
If it sux, take it back, no re-stocking fee.

Let me be the first to recommend either a Canon 1Ds Mark III and a duffel bag full of L series lenses or a Hasselblad with a data back and a bunch of German glass.

Let me narrow this down..lets say I will spend up to $200. What features do I want for sure and what features do I want to stay away from. I have a nice Canon 35MM with about 15 lenses and 10 filters. Just got tired of the expense of film and processing and end up with a couple good pics. The camera should be small enough just to carry around without a bag..thanks.
By the way..the chic in the avatar wants to know if she looks fat in those sunglasses..

Yes. Lots.
Canon G series, Panasonic has a few, and there are loads of others.
Perhaps you could give us a little more detail on your requirements so we can recommend Nikon dSLR and other inappropriate systems.

I just picked up a Kodak V1003 and added a 2gig stick @ Sams Club for under $200. Hate to say it but Sams does not carry them here in Phoenix any more. So far I like the camera. Does videos and panoramic pic's as well.

Easy there, administrator Brian. My response was to djipodunkie, not to the original poster.

I found out quickly, with my first digital, that sometimes it is real tough to see the screen on the back of the camera due to bright sunlight. Think about getting one that has a view finder ( the opening you look through) not just the screen. A lot of them don't have one. Also, if you're going to do any close ups you need one with Macro. Most have it but some times you have to push 8-10 buttons to get into the Macro mode and then again to get back out. I learned these things the hard way taking photos of cars for dealers and putting them on the internet. The best inexpensive and easy to use camera I found is the Canon Power shot A550. Less than $200

Ok, I have a Kodak and am looking to upgrade. Are there any small cameras that don't eat though AA batteries every 100 pictures, have very little shutter lag "this is huge", decent optical zoom, and an lcd that is bright enough to see during the day and pretty big for under $300? My buddy has a small Lyca "sp" that is pretty nice, but I'm not sure on the quality or availability. Any info?
