View Full Version : The proper way to be a jet boater...

OK, so I learned a few tips yesterday from some seasoned jet boat owners.
The first tip is do not have any cleats in the boat. You've got a steering wheel and diverter handle to tie off to:
http://www.***boat.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=42909&stc=1&d=1194905768
Secondly, you can save lots of valuable room by not carrying fenders. Life vests double as fenders and should be on the boat anyway:
http://www.***boat.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=42910&stc=1&d=1194905840
Please note the ever so friendly jet boat owners reaction to my attempts to learn something new. :D :D :D

Now if you're going to tie up a few jet boats, make sure to bring plenty of "rope" and don't get it confused with lines that regular boats use to tie off to one another:
http://www.***boat.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=42911&stc=1&d=1194905976
Another helpful tip I learned here is to make sure that the headers are cooled off before you attempt to tie off to them or else you could end up melting your "rope." :D
Lastly, feel free to lend a helping hand. It should take at least 3 people to tie up one boat in this manner, and do it correctly, that is. :D :D :D

It sounds like someone wishes they had a jet boat. :D
Life jackets are way better fenders then the fender itself. :D

I've still got one, however, it has cleats hanging inside the gunwales, and does have REAL dock lines and fenders. I've just been doing it wrong all these years. :(

There are many different styles, but they all bear some type of resemblance to this:

Thanks for posting that up.
Sorry, but it doesn't look like that would work very well. Heck it looks like that rope could pull right out of there if'n ya gave it a lil tug. I believe I'll stick with the steering wheel, ski hook, bucket shift handle, bow eylette, headers or the like.

Since when do jet boaters act like the ballers with their 50K ocean barges? My jet boat is usually moving across the water, not tied to a bunch of wanna be trailer queens.......Wanna stop for a while, beach it.........or just drift.........MP

nowhere to beach at lake pleasant. along with burning alot of fuel, i like to hang out with my friends when we go to the lake even if some of them do have 100k+ ocean barges...and believe me, those boats we tied up with are far from trailer queens :D

Im easy that way,..."Get the fuq away from my boat, and if you need a hand,... here is the wrong end of my aluminum paddle, fit perfectly on the side of your head!"
I guess you could say i dont tie up much, and if i am floating down river with the friends that i hang out with, they have just as much respect for my property as i do theirs!:D

This is a great display of the strength & structural integrity of a steering wheel used as a tie off/anchor point....:D
Looks like a nice day out there.... :D

I still dont understand why anyone would want one of those cleat things on their boat. The steering wheel and shifter work just fine and there already in the boat. And a fender??? Thats just more weight and takes up more of the beer storage area. :jawdrop: :D :D

If that's your vest in the picture, I believe that'd be all it's good for
Mike. Looks a little faded and tattered. Might be time to get some
new PFDs.

That pic was just used for demonstrative purposes only. There are actually flush mount cleats that are far safer and don't pose the type of risk that you speak of. ;)

He'll probably have it until you get a boat running and then get it back to you. :jawdrop:  :D

No. He did have a big bag of fried chicken, but they must have been out of buckets that day. :notam: :D

When floating we usually just use our feet to hold the boats apart that way a wave won't bash them together. We rarely tie off.

You guys have it all wrong. Those cleats are so that once you take the first of a six pack from the plastic ring, you can hang the rest for easy access later from the two boats you're rafted up to. It's their job to keep the beer cold. :)

Cleats, fenders and official boating ties are all nice things, but they take up space and add weight. Space and weight that could more effectively used for more beer on board. You could effectively use some of the items though - tie the six-pack ring to the center of the cleat with the rope, that way the beer can stay in the water and stay colder.

All jet boaters do have fenders. They just stay on the trailer where they are intended.
