I built a 454 420 clone but I used large oval port heads that were ported and flowed with 2.19/1.88 it had 8.79-1 cr, headers w/thru-hull no mufflers a DUI ign 750 carb with a 1" spacer sitting on a performer rpm air-gap the boat did 69.2 on gps its a 93 nova spyder 23 ft. I had oil line failure and smoked some bearings. So now I am building a stroker 489 with a callies crank(forged) h-beam rods, forged pistons. My heads are the same but are now port matched and have 2.25/1.88 valves with 11/32 stems. It is going to have a bigger cam (flat tappet) with the 4-7 swap in firing order but we haven't decided which one yet it will be bigger than the 420cam. The new compression ratio is 9.5-1 also it will have 3/4 cooling lines and a larger cooler. Will I notice a difference in performance and speed?

I'm gonna say yes, especially out of the hole with the stroker crank.

If you haven't gotten the cam yet, my advice is don't waste your $$ on the 4/7 swap. At the level of power you're going to be making, I don't think you'll ever reap the benefits. Best thing you can do is have your heads flowed, and then have the cam ground for your application. You might think about stepping up to a hyd roller or even a solid. I don't think the 2.25 int. valves will get you much more than the 2.19's, either, unless you're going with a custom multi angle valve job (4 or 5 angles) and bowl work to match. The added compression, cubic inches, and the right cam are good steps. Bigger carb wouldn't hurt.

And also, you might wanna try the hip and trick 3/4 cam in it too.
But before you run that 3/4 cam, you gotta make sure your muffler bearings are in tip top shape. :D :D

Go with a good solid roller cam :)
