Hey if you're going to try flammable liquids such as Lighter Fluid. Buy a Gallon of Coleman Fuel, it's the same thing and cheaper than buying a gallon of Zippo Fluid. Be careful even trace amounts can vaporise in the dryer and cause a big focking boom! But before you blow yourself and the house to hell I would suggest the Greased Lightning. Purple Power works also and is Bio Degradable and most important Non Flammable & Dryer Safe.
Spray it on, rub it in, let it sit, spray it some more and wash.

I used to haul hot oil.. AKA Hot Asphult :) :) :) You don't need to buy a whole liter :) :) of fluid to clean your jeans... I tried the other stuff and nothing worked better than the really flamable stuff.. Wash as usual after pre treating and hang the jeans to dry so's not to blow up your laundry room.

Mineral Spirits. Works great to break down the tar. You can buy the odorless kind. If you wash them, some of the tar is going to stick to the tub. You'll have to wipe it out with mineral spirits too.
