Hey Dave, I have a coupler here that I only ran for one season. I'd let it go cheap. Let me know if you want to see some close up pictures of it. Cale:)

What's the verdict Doc? I wish I was there to help. Maybe I aught to move down there, closer to all the action. I'm definitely not opposed to the whole idea.

What's a coupler? What causes it to break?

The coupler bolts to the fly wheel and that is the point in which the drive makes contact with the engine. Why this one broke the way it did, no one knows but all of the bolt holes are broken out of it.

Were there any bolts in the coupler holes that didnt break?? If not the coupler bolts just worked loose and that grenaded the coupler.????

yes all but one. But all the bolts were tight.

Geeze DAVEO, that don't look so bad......ya should be able to fit the plate right back where it was, borrow a few foundation bolt washers off the bolts inside your garage and use them to cover the cracks and you'll be running again in no time!! Whaddya think   ;) :) See ya later!

By no means am I a "pro" (I didn'nt even know what a coupler was), but I just looked at that picture and thought to myself "what could have caused that?", seems to me you should definately check the engine/drive alignment. Aren't the gears usually the weak link?

By the looks of the two remaining bolt holes, there was movement, as in loose bolts. That would cause the fatigue in the metal that is missing. Just my 4cents (inflation).

I think Ill just look for one some were and make sure they are tight and the motor/drive alignment is right first. Plus Ive seen worse.:D

Hey dave when cars break flexplates, it is normally dowl pin missing in block or pushed in too far.

Had that happen in a pickup years ago. Going along and then the engine was just too responsive to the pedal as I casted to a stop, still in Drive... Turned out that though the bolts were tight, the flexplate was cocked and there she went. These days I'm all about Loctite and wiring.
Looking at your coupler, I'd go with loose bolts.

Dave, I almost had the same thing happen to my coupler a couple of years back. Luckily we caught it when there were just cracks around all the bolt holes before it actually broke when we pulled the motor for a refresh. At that time I found out that my drive and motor weren't aligned just right. Since then, we have realigned and I haven't had any further problems. You might want to check your alignment to see if that could be a cause.
BTW, I'm pulling my motor too (on Friday) for a refreshening with new rings and bearings. It should be back in and ready to go for the first lunch run in the spring. :)
Good luck with your motor. Keith

Loctite. ( red ) should be lots on those. When I took mine it did not come off easy.
Make sure the coupler you put back on is the h.d. version. they have some low h.p. versions since all the sbc and bbc have the same bolt pattern.

Dave I have the HD new in stock and a few good used ones like the one you posted. The HD is steal spline mainly used for work boats and or boats that do alot of idling. Still better for higher horsepower but no stronger as far as how it bolts up to yhe flywheel.
