OK,FOR AN 18 FOOT JET WHAT KIND OF MPH WOULD YOU GUYS CONSIDER FAST -SO SO-AND SLOW.IN GENERAL OF COURSE. argue

HBjet
01-05-2003, 12:33 PM
I think it would depend on the power it had in it.

I dont think your gonna get an answer on that.. everyone has a different perspective on fast so so and slow.. so if someone said 80 is fast someone else would debate it.My question is why waist your money on this kind of propulsion for an everyday cruiser...Unless its a dollar thing and i know hot tub and zellmers boat run but these are drag boats not river boats..

O.B eddie, I like how you can say...
O.B eddie:
everyone has a different perspectiveThen say...
O.B eddie:
why waist your money on this kind of propulsion for an everyday cruiserNo one knows where this guy does his boating, and by the size of the hull, I would assume it would be somewhere not so choppy. His decision to run a jet could vary from being safer with people/children in the water, to shallow water, to hearing the sound of a Big Block run with headers....the list goes on.
So as you posted above, everyone has a different perspective on what fast is. Well, everyone also has a different perspective as to what kind of propulsion to use for an everyday cruiser.

How fast do you go Sleek? :D
Sure it depends on who you ask and what they got. But just for discussion, a common measure could be what most 18' jets run. Based on that, I say:
Slow: 55 and below
So-so: 55-60
Average: 60-65
Above Average: 65-70
Fast: 70-80
Very Fast: 80-95
Racer: 95+
As far as I know, these are hard fast rules. :D

In my never humble opinion I can say from boats I've had in the past that it seems like when you pass the 80 mph mark you can really notice things are starting to go by fast and if something went wrong it could be dangerous. Along with the feeling of speed comes the strange need to go faster and accelerate quicker.

THANKS I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT.AND OH YES AT FULL THROTTLE THINGS ARE DEFINATLY CRUSING BY VERY QUICKLY.BUT I AM THE KIND OF GUY THAT FAST IS NEVER FAST ENOUGH,WELL AT LEAST NOT YET.... :D

Ok H.B, if you want to define my post, From what i have read on this board your boat is 80 m.p.h than you will go on and say with a cooler girlfriend 30 gals. of gas etc. etc. What I want to know is what will your boat do without all the excuses. They are very heavy, all I was tryin to say is speed is defined by A. what ya got (80 in your case)B. what ya want C. What ya can afford Sorry H.B obviously you are not happy with 80 or you would not build another motor right.!!!And I think your (from what I read) PRETTY COOL!!!

I'll break it down for you.
When I ran 80.6 on the GPS I had very little gas (probably 5-7 gal) MissHBjet was in the boat, and the sun was starting to set (meaning a little cooler outside) and the water conditions where perfect (slight chop)
My Hull weighs 600lbs. I have a BBC .30 over with a weiand tunnel ram and dual 450 Holley single pumpers. Motor is about 425hp and I have a Legend B alum. impeller that was detailed by MPD and a custom loader also by MPD. The Carbs where dialed in by DNE and I have some rect port heads on the motor.
So, with all of that, 80.6mph on the GPS is nothing to make excuses about. I'm proud of it!
As for as building another motor, I have no plans on building a new motor. I am adding some 750 DP's and doing some pump work this year though.

As well you should be proud...being one of the "very fast" jets :)
Mike, I'm thinking in general, a "cooler girlfriend" weighs less than a regular, so you go faster. Dual purpose and all. Not sure if this is what OB's refered to, certainly doesn't apply in HB's case...

I have to agree with some others, 80mph is the critical speed.
80+ your very fast
60-80 your fast
50-60 your average
below 50 well... :(
HBjet, gotta hand it to you. 80mph with only 425hp, you gots yo stuff dialed in pretty damn good! :) Congrats!
**** you Chet. :D

Thanks for the help with the pics, gmcjet. Where did I go wrong? By the way any input on my question? How do I get more rpm or do I need it, and would that equate to a higher top speed. I'm with mooma, always need more speed.

Barney, what do you know, you drivin' a leaf blower and all... :D
As for respect, well, that may have little to do with top speed.
