I have a 1976 DiMarco 21' Cruiser. It has a chrome steel double fin that is a drop thru. It has some pretty big dings in it and I would like to replace it. Should I replace it with a stainless steel fin or stick with a chrome steel fin? Which is better/longer lasting? I'm also concerned with rust/corrosion. Who makes them? Thanks.:)

Chrome is a no-no on underwater hardware.

What about using Stainless, I like the fact about not having to deal with rust. I'm concerned about the breaking/cracking issue with stainless steels. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Use 17-4 and heat treat, no problems breaking!..

Dimarco21 I use only 17-4 stainless steel for struts and fins. 17-4 is a chromium-nickle stainless steel that has a very high strength when heat treated equal to alloy steels [ 4130 - 4140 ]. It has a high corrosion resistance. The only draw back is the cost. Hope this helps. Thanks j.j.

If you have any trouble finding what you want just ping me or call JFAB / Jerry (636-673-7102) can make anything you want out of any material you want and can heat treat to any spec you desire. His prices are reasonable.
Stainless and aluminum fab is his specialty.

Thanks GofastRacer and J.J., Is it a heat treat or a stress releive just to stablize the material? Can you also make rudders out of it and be safe? Thanks.

Dimarco after welding it is stress relieved and neat treated to a H900 condition. I have not made any rudders at this time, I feel sure the material will hold up but not sure I want the liability. thanks j.j.

Thanks J.J., I'll give ya a call.
Any of the ski race guys use stainless steel rudders? is it a risk? Thanks.
