With that big hole in the transom I'd say jet. It does make me feel better about my project to see one in this shape and someone still willing to tackle it. Good luck with the project.

What's that big hole in the transom? The propshaft hole should be smaller and go through the bottom of the boat. :D
Just kidding. Good luck with your project.

If you are making it a v drive you might as well knock those 2 bulkheads out right now.
I have the same hull.

Ding ding ding......Aint no jet, but it aint a vdrive YET either.....A great deal of work regardless of the choice of drive........So what is the plan?...Replace all the stringers, bulkheads, supports?......Isn't that about the time you say "WTF am I dong"........Check the bottom carefully for a big hook.....MP

The WTF is he doing is saving himself a ton O cash and getting into a boat he could never have other wise. At least that's my deal. No way could I flip the nut for a new 21 twin turbo double throw down Schiada. I just don't have the money for that.
The hard part is not loosing intrest and getting it done.

Hi Chris - Thanks for getting these pictures up. The trailer and outside hull looks good. Just a matter of cleaning out the old stringers and setting new ones, patching the stern drive cutout. Then you can blueprint the bottom and set her up right. Then do a fresh coat of gel coat - and you've got a brand new hull. Ton of potential there. Definately recommend going with open stringers and don't gellcoat the inside hull like mine. You want to be watching for weak spots in the resin/cloth with the stringers. Definately would like to meet up at Christmas time when I'm in Havasu - if you're there. Do you have all the tools for ripping those stringers out, or should I be hunting the barn for a sawsall and a grinder. Do you have a source for marine lumber - May want to check in with Lee on this one. You have an awesome project Chris. On a side note, I'll be patching and resetting tank brackets in my Dad's 20'. I'll let you know what I learn there, since you'll need to do the same thing and don't want the bolts pulling through the bottom. I have some glass work to do.

Cool Project! I'm glad my transom was the only thing rotten on mine. Its a Schiada so it is worth all the time, effort, late nights, splinters, busted knuckles and cash you will invest. Hope to see you on the lake sometime.

Thanks for the positive support from everybody. The big hole in the back was for the stern/out drive (Volvo), and yes it will be reborn as a V drive, And also yes this is the only way I can afford to have one of these great boats. I was raised around boats in parker my whole childhood from sitting on my Dads lap as at 2 yrs. old steering our wood deck Hallett flat to a bunch of years later driving Dads 21' campbell crusier (had to get the bigger boat cause Mom got piched out of the passanger seat of the flat and said "THAT'S IT"). For as long as I can remember I have wanted a 21RC but could never afford what I wanted (and I aint gettin no yonger) so I bought this boat 4 yrs. ago from the third owner up in Henderson. I have had a blast with it these last four yrs. but the plan all along was to do a complete rebuild ( I made a promiss to my Dad that I would use it while I collected parts so I would not lose intrest in it because of the time and $$$$) so this last year I noticed the motor was starting to lean pretty bad to the port side and the bolts for the motor mount were pulling thru the stringer and figured nows as good as time as any. By the way it is a 1977, there have a bunch of people telling me that I am NUTS to do this "just buy a new hull". No offence to Lee and the gang but what a new bare hull costs I could buy my boat two times over and still have a grip of $ left. I do not see any diffrence in what the car guys do with a rusted out "barn find" and what I am doing, and besides the last time I went to a car event there were'nt any lady's walking around in thongs and pasties :D
Sorry for the long post,
Chris.

I realy dig the colors on this boat, @ my neighbors shop a couple years ago, there was a 21 RC that was orange/white and had brown interior, the name on the hull was "Smokin Joe", bitchen boat i had to steal a pic and post it up on my garage wall, anyways the seats in this boat is what i dug the most, they sat low, and layed waaaay back and even though the color was odd, it went great with the boat! just my opinion
If i were to own a boat like this, i would probably go with oranges and reds,...for sure!
Good luck on your adventure!
keep the pics commin through this loooooong winter!

Never on the bottom, and I would not say neglected just no thought as to the future. None of the holes in the stringers have any resin, oh seats are getting loose....no problem just drywall screw them to the subfloor :jawdrop: . It was unbeliveable how many screws/lag bolts were used and not a one had any type of sealent in the hole. So over 30 years of boating, washing, swimming etc. it has taken a tole. Let this be a lesson to seal/resin everything, or just sell it to some guy like me that looks forward to making it right :D

Chris - you ever get your V-drive situation taken care of with the gears? I recall that you had a mix of 12 degree gears in a 10 degree case - or something like that. Can you use these gears? They are 49%, 10 degreed. They are yours if you can use them. You'll need new bearings, but the gears are in good enough shape to get your through. I can bring them at Christmas time. Sean

:D Chris,
I know your not ready for cav plates just yet, but I saved the original s.s. plates that came off my 21 when I fabricated new longer ones. They are in very nice shape and could use just a lil buff on the top side to make them really shine. The holes of course will already be drilled on the plates. I'm in Havasu due to my folks living there often, if you like they are yours, I can email pics of the plates if you think you'll use them. Let me know.
Scott
Hey Scott, this is very kind of you to offer these up for my project, but I am using the longer style plates on my boat. I have the material already and am just waiting till I roll the ol' girl over and can remove the little 4" factory deals to line up/mark the holes and then I will have them cut. I am going to use a water jet to cut them, I have heard in the past that when you shear s.s. plate it can weaken it
Thank you again Scott,
Chris.

Very cool offer Sean thank you. Yeah my deal is a 12* case with 10* gears :( :( , so as it stands now I am going to have the 12* freshened up and see if I can sell it and then locate a 10* for a good price. I was thinking of starting off with something like an 11 1/2 x 15 with a 29* gear but from reading lately it sounds like the gear should be in the 40's. At what point in gear size do you have to remove the water cooling passage for clearence and then how do you cool the V drive. If you still have these when I get my 10* I will hit you up to try them out.

Chris - I haven't cut my water jackets, so you can run up to atleast 48% overdrive without cutting if you have the same type of case that I have - split case, refer to the photos since I'm not sure of the case model. If you run an 1 1/8" prop shaft, I've got some 2 blade props for you to try as well. I've got 3 of them for my boat - the Menkins that I run works well. I know it's always good to have additional props, but being used is better than sitting on the shelf. Let me know if 1 of these would help you out, I can send you over the size and pitch when I head to my parent's next.

Hey Sean, thats good news on the V drive case's and the water jackets. Yes I will have a 1 1/8" prop shaft in the boat......even though it will slow it down 7 mph :D (1 1/8" rudder as well). The prop offer is over the top, most would lend out their lady before a good prop that works. I know I have not come across many props that are 1 1/8" compared to all the 1" deals, harder to come by used or not that many people use them. I am a long ways off from needing to try props, at least a week or two :D :D I figure I should be calling on you for these in 2018.....just kidding, the only thing that will slow me down on this project is time and money    Thanks again Sean it is very nice of you.

But your one up on me Icarus yours is already set up for a V drive, mine has a giant drain plug hole in the back that I have to deal with :D. Right back at you with the good luck on your project, do you think you will have it done for summer of 08.

Thanks!
Well, that's the goal, finances and weather permitting. Yeah, I lucked out in that it's a V drive, though I would have bought your project in a second. I mean c'mon, A Schiada??!
I've been a fan of cruisers since I started with an 70-something 21' Eliminator V drive twin step in the mid 80's and a 70-something Eliminator jet after that. Both were basket cases that I was sure I could get running again and look as good as anything in the Reader Rides section. You'd think I'd know better...
My grief now is the thought of lining up the larger C500 with the shaft and then getting the rails for the 454/T400 all happy. The 455 and Velvet Drive were just through bolted at the stringers, but I thought I'd add a little flair and go with rails. Know better...
And then there's the fixed plates.

Hey "Sawtooth". This sure looks a mighty big project. Have you ever worked on boats before?. If so I might be in the market for a guy like you to hire. You seem to be very thorough and don't mind digging in to a project. We don't do alot of cruisers, not to say we won't, but we mostly do flattys. Have you ever worked on these style of boats?. Good luck on your project and keep us posted. Don't have to much fun  :D .

Dear Billy V, Thank you for the job offer I will make an appt. to stop by and fill out a job app. and interview. I have been a trained roller skate tech. for the last 3 yrs. and just last month I was promoted to lead tech of the scooter dept. I have no training on boat work but with the hand tools I have how hard could it be. You mention you work on "flattys", what is this? My current project has a small slope to the bottom but with a little work and a 4" sanding block I should be able to make it what you call a "flatty". Will this make it much faster, I am looking to break into the 40 mph range.....wish me luck!
Oh and don't worry about my safety I was able to pick up a skateing helmet and elbow pads for cost.....I just wish they had a color other than pink, oh well nobody should notice when they see how fast I can go.
Thanks again for the job offer, I will be able to work everyday. I can start at 9:30ish and work until 2:00ish except wednesdays oh and every third friday and I am not sure yet but I might have to have mondays and tuesdays off. Do you offer a 401K plan, how about 3-4 weeks paid vacation and full medical/dental plans, and I will need a company car and cell phone. If I start in two weeks how much will my Christmas bouns be. Can't wait to start the new job, it's cool if I bring my project to work on at your business/shop....after hours of course.
