RPM is the factor, more rpm at a certain hp/tq level = parts breakage. Know your setup's max rpm and gear accoringly. For example: If you are swinging a big 4.5 inch stroke and using stock type rods with low quality fastners, keep the the rpm low.Low is under 5500 rpm or less. If you can increase power at the lower rpm range and absorb it with a bigger prop or impeller you should be fine. My point is to keep the rpms in the same range.

So true, unless the load is massive, like your swinging a 3 ft prop, the strain on a motor will be from high rpm.

I oblonged a 4 bolt stock crank @ 6200 RPM, 550-600 or so HP if that helps. Engine still ran OK, but was losing oil pressure @ rpm. Everything else was just fine. I ran it with that set up for two and a half years. Crank is the weak point....
