View Full Version : I need a little central heating help, question?

When I turn on the heater, after about 10 to 15 minutes, the heat goes off, but the fan stays on till we turn it off because then the house does not get warm enough to have the thermostat shut off the system.
Any idea what it could be?

If the thermostat is not reaching temp, why does the heat shut off? Or is that your question?
Thats my question.

Can you make the heat come back on right away by switching it off and back on?
Yes.

or something in the board.Switch it cooling, you have a/c?Run it in cooling, see if it shuts off then also. That will eliminate and gas or heating issues

Bad relay, bad circuit board. Don't bother looking any further.
if its a heatpump could be a bad reversing valve.Which is also a electrical issue which will require a service call

A standing pilot light is a small flame that is always lit. It lights the gas when the thermostat opens the gas valve.
Electronic ignition uses a spark device to light the gas when the thermostat turns the valve on. Just like a gas grill.
Have you verified at the unit that the gas is actually lighting when the thermostat is turned up ?

Yes.
bad board or relay.Sounds like the gas valve is shutting off for some reason. When they 'fail' or have issues they go to normally closed to turn off the gas.You can put a jumper wire to by pass the relay for the part. But without being there its tough to do from here

Could be the flame rod. That tells the control board that the burners have lit after the gas valve has been turned on by the thermostat. If it fails to sense a flame it will cause the gas valve to turn back off. That is a safety device that prevents your house from filling up with gas. They will get carbon deposits on them over time and malfunction. You can remove it and hit it with some sandpaper and that will take care of the problem.
On a side note, if you don't know if you have a standing pilot light or electronic ignition, I wouldn't recommend trying to repair it.
Just thinking about the safety of you and your family.

Have it inspected for cracks/holes in the heat exchanger, go to the web sight and see if it is on the recall list.......

Unfortunately your only real option is to replace the heater, and if your A/C was installed in 91 as well, you might as well upgrade it to a higher SEER rated unit. I just did mine last summer, went with a Carrier Infinity, using 410A refrigerant, cost me roughly 6K with all the bells and whistles.

The AC unit was replaced in 97 I think, so I don't know if I want to replace that just yet.

I just looked at my paperwork, the Amana would have been $4K, I went with Carrier, $5873 installed, new heater, condensor, compressor, thermostat.

With a furnace of that age, you need a mirror and flashlight and look for cracks in the heat exchanger. You have to pull the burners to get to the heat exchanger, so take a 5 gallon bucket with you so you can dump the crap from the burners and hit them with a wire brush. If you find cracks, unplug it and get a new one ASAP, you'll go to bed and never wake up. Your coil might be dirty and the squirrel cage (fan) might be dirty, that may decrease the airlow and the furnace will overheat and shut itself down too. You can remove the fan and use an air compressor to clean the blades.
You said your filter was clean, so I'd also check the roof vent and make sure it is on properly and clean. If it's not venting properly, it will also shut it down.
those are a few things you can do real quick to check before calling a tech out.
