Have a 468 chevy with 671 blower (duel carbs brand new)put on by shop.the motor is to hard to start (floods out) it has a mechanicl fuel pump only.wich pumps up to 7 psi right away.plugs are soaked and black..and if it starts it blows out black smoke and particals.like its loaded up for a couple of revs than clear and smooth..question for you guys is..should it have a electric fuel pump instead?

Have you checked the float levels?

Not enough info.
What fuel pump does it have now?
Is there a fuel pressure regulator?
Sounds like:
A. fuel pressure regulator stuck...or non existent with a fuel pump that can provides too much fuel pressure therefore:
b: Knocking the needles and seats off...so they leak fuel into the motor. Or bad or dirty needles /seats.

"holley high volume mechanical pump"
Not your flooding problem but be aware, you may near the limit of HP that this pump can support.

If the power valves are blown out the carbs will leak down when sitting and run fat when idiling.

Mike: We are running that exact motor in the hydro, except we have 850's. On our deal we have the same fuel pump as you, no problems for two years. As mentioned before, check floats.

Mike: If the float bowls are full, it doesn't turn over a rev or two before it fires, some places like BDS say to take it to 2000 RPM after starting, but we don't do that. Everything works just fine, it starts very easily, we give it a squirt, go about halfway with throttle, crank, and it starts.

BTW, Mike, We are at 31 degrees timing @2000 RPM, our fuel press is 7.5psi, and we never go over 5 percent over on the pulley combo, this keeps us on the number.

as many boats u have seen go thru ur drive way it should not be a problem. what is the deal. did u hook up the fuel preasure gauge wrong hehehehehehe. i would check the float level that is low preasure level should not hurt anything in the carb also u might have hurt the power valve.
