Just dumped a couple more pics off the camera.
Interesting how something so beautiful can be so destructive. Every tree in the city and surrounding areas looked exactly like these.
One pic waiting to go down a road where the iced over trees made a tunnel. Was very cool.

Wow. After seeing the first pic, I wondered "How can a tree support all that weight?" then I saw the pictures of the collapsed trees. Too bad.

The day time temps have been the same here.
Just at night it was cold enough to freeze the rain we had for about 3 days. it's really not very cold out.
As a matter of fact most of the ice is gone. Just got electricity and cable back so I could post the pics.

Cool pics. We didn't get it that bad here in IL. Most of ours melted in the rain yesterday too.

My little brother is from Broken Arrow and sent me pictures of the trees down in his front yard. Scary stuff!!

My folks got power back yesterday morning and have tree trimmers coming today. My brother called from Cali last night thinking that we could get them a generator for Christmas. He was thinking about one of the $500 models. I had to remind him that those were no frills, and I do not see my 80+ year old dad getting it out of the shed and pull starting it in icy weather. On a bright note, I need a generator for work in my pasture and I should be able to find some real cheap come spring.
I still have one BIL without power, but everyone else is back on. He works as a private contractor during the winter and was out getting new chainsaw blades. He is trying to restore power to buildings, but now the problem is getting parts. The weather has stripped all of the supply houses in the area.

Can someone explain to me what causes it to turn to ice like this vs just snowing.

Ice like that comes down as rain very near 32°F and lands on surfaces (i.e. trees, roads, etc.) that are below freezing. Typically the air temp is below freezing before the storm then as the rain comes the air warms slightly. This situation give you black ice on roads.
Last Saturday here in Wichita (3 hrs NW of these pics), we had ice pellets - or rain drops that froze on the way down.
Snow freezes as it condenses out of the air and therefore forms flakes rather than ice pellets.
I was in Tulsa Tuesday night for work and the town is a mess - down trees everwhere.

i remember one year as a child growing up back east, we had a light rain one evening on top of snow we already had. by morning all the rain froze on top of the snow and everything was one big sheet of ice by morning.
info, very cool pics.

Lower level cold air system. The official meteorolgical dumbass term.
The air at ground level is colder than the upper level air. It rains and the rain freezes upon contact with cold objects on the ground. Pretty much everything except the roads.

Those trees that just split to the ground in every direction blow my mind. Wonder if it happens all at once or what.
The sound of a limb breaking off and falling is awesome. The ice sounds like breaking glass.

Warm air mass riding over cold air mass, this particular storm produced thunderstorms as there was a cooler air mass forced above the warm air mass, therefore the warm air was rising into that cooler air which produced heavy rain and thunderstorms....at least that is how it was explained to me!!!! I am in OKC and luckily have power, many around don't and won't for awhile.

We work maybe 2 to 3 Ice storms a year mostly not that bad . The 4 worst that I remember are the 96 Ice storm in Va Beach VA ,I think 97 storm in Newyork Maine Canada, 98 storm in willamsburg Richmond newportnews VA.01or 02 Durham NC . They are not fun to work. The worst was in Va Beach work all day and come home to a cold house and there is nothing you can do to get your own lights on.
