Which is better? I've seen both on jet boats. I would think that the ring gear would be cheaper and less rotating mass. Are there any advantages to running a fly wheel on a jet boat?

ring gear? Are you referring to the flex plate?I think you need the flywheel if you have some sort of clutch. For jets the flexplate is the way to go.

That's cool Charger. My Olds has a bigass flywheel. Bet a new flexplate will only be 8c's.

There's a couple recent threads on this subject. Do a search. :)

Ya, Ring gear, Flex plate same difference. I tried a search nothing in the past year on pros & cons.
Just wondering, because I have one each and getting ready to put the motor back in and I've seen several factory setups with a painted bigass flywheel.

my LS7 came with a flywheel on it. I changed it out for a flexplate after a couple of weekends. the differance is about 25 LBS, motor revs way quicker,I think better holeshot. one drawback if you or a friend unloads the pump in the air your motor hits the rev limiter right MEOW :D .

We run flex-plates. Just check them every now and then. I've had them crack around the driveshaft flange and the welds on the ring gear. This is after severe duty of racing, but just a thought.

You will want to use the one that has the least amount of weight. Tim
