Removing the rubrail

My riveted rubrail is coming off. I just want to take all of it out. I once remember a few guys here who have done that.
In the transom, I noticed that there is a 1/8" gap in the fiberglass that the rubrail is covering. I thought about glassing that gap with some fiberglass mat and resin and then sanding it after it dries. Along the side of the boat, the partially removed rubrail reveals a slightly rough seam on the fiberglass. I was thinking of just sanding that smooth.
I also need to fill in the holes where the rivets are now. Again, fiberglass mat and resin first came to mind.
Any thoughts from people who have done this? Thanks in advance.

It's called capping and yes you need to use good fiberlass because you are mating the upper and lower halfs of the boat. Make sure you remove all the rivets/bolts from the hull before you cap it. some of them are hard to get to.

Todd at TRG is a stud when it comes to glassin but I'm more than willing share how I did mine if it would help.

Capping is quite a bit of work to do it right. I've done it once myself. Just replace your aluminum rub rail with a no insert stainless rail. Through bolt it with lock nuts and your good to go. Looks custom and is a lot easier than capping.
