Although I cannot take credit for the paint/graphics (Baca painting) here is my completed Southwind project.
I purchased this boat after confering with Southwind afficionado Cy Locke owner of "Money Sucker" San Diego CA, ultimately, a deal was struck with the original owner minus the engine and associated components.
Since I was fat on BBF motors the turn around time for the conversion was a snap.
The boat lay dormant for over (3) years so naturally the tanks had to be removed and flushed, I rewired the boat from front to rear as all of the wiring had deteriorated, nor could I begin to make heads or tails of the past owners original intent.
The new engine is a 30 over 460 with all the basic hot rod goodies, although it certainly not going to be a threat to society (speed wise) I feel as though she may reach the low to mid seventy mph range, pump work performed by Greg Shoemaker.

Looking good KC. Why don't you post this up in the east county boats deal or on HB. Show where it was when you got it to now. I can't wait to see this run.

I've got basically the same set up 460 30 over OTheaders, Weiand tunnel ram, dual 850 dubble pumpers, etc. 'cept I've got the runner bottom & I get mid 70's on my bro's gps. Fast enuf to keep the wakeboarders and bayliners off my ass. Have fun, maybe I'll see ya on the strip.
What is a boat? A hull in the water you throw money into!:D

looks great! what's the story with those outter sponsons? they are certainly not "stock", and have been modified by somebody.
you should have no trouble hitting mid 70s in that thing, with the right hardware and setup...

BP, That is air entrapment to keep the boat from rocking back and forth. They were typically 1 1/2" glassed on. Petrofied had them and really helped against the nose hula dance. Tom wanted to put some entrapment on mine but use aluminum just to keep the air from blowing out the sides of the tunnels at the rear. I am not sure who did Petrofieds bottom but I thought ie was Bennett.

i've had 2" aluminum on mine for some years now, started out with 3/4" wood. i'd go to 3" if i could find the right material, but the 2" has worked just fine for the past 3-4 years. i've seen one other boat with glassed add-on's - personally, i think they should be angled up toward the outside a lot more than they are, but that's just imo...

here's one...

the little button screws running along the inside of the sponson, that are screwed into nutcerts, are left over from a previous experiment. the aluminum angle has stainless machine screws holding it up.
when i first started going faster with this thing, i went through all the hula gyrations, got used to it. learned how to dampen it, and how to make it worse. but that slows the boat..
when i had the old low hp 427 in it with stock sponsons, in one weekend at ming i got it from 72 on the first pass to 77 on the last - at those speeds, it never even came close to sponson walking. with mine, you had to get above 95ish to even get close to high enough on the water, where it would begin.
with less power in this blue sw, it's doubtful this would ever become an issue at 80 or less, even with stock sponsons. having these dams, you can go much faster very safely and comfortably.
since mine's doing everything i want it to right now, don't know if i'll change anything. but if i was ever to get super ambitious and flip the thing, i'd make up some blocks to replace the angle with, but make them a bit different, like 3+" deep, and angle all the way from the new inside point to the original depth of the outside, with NO flat area. imo, the flat area doesn't do anything except create additional drag - it's not needed to create stability; stability is created by keeping air pressure equal in both tunnels.

sorry about that - got a fairly large construction going on here and the tilers were just finishing up, so got interupted.
phoenix started out like crap with a .38. worked all day friday and saturday trying to get the thing dialed. finally got it figured out by sunday morning, ran some 0's, 0 lights, gathered up a stone dude and a paycheck:D after ALOT of years trying down there, i -think- i finally have an idea how to race there. water was like muddy syrup - at one point, i got a little spray from another boat while on the rope, it stuck to my visor and i couldn't see - had a helluva time getting some of it off so i could see the tree - it was nasty.
sunday was a lot of fun - both stoker and torchy thought i'd just go away like all my tries down there in the past... but... didn't happen... :D redbluff next!

That is what I am looking to do with mine. You are right. the only thing that the addition needs to do is keep the air in the tunnel and not bllow out the sides. Mine starts rocking between 95-98 and so did Tre's. WHen he came back with a # I didn't believe I had to inform him of that and he didn't have the hulla so I called BS. The only thing about these is making sure you are lined up right on the trailer to avoid smashing them or tearing them off the boat on the bunk. Thanks Bob. I am off to the river this weekend but riding on Tre's pontoon. I have some more work to do on both boats at home and my landscaping duties took the time that I had last weekend.

cy, like i implied, if i were to do it again, the inside edge would be at least 3" deep. and if it didn't fit the trailer, i'd shim up the bunks on the trailer to make it fit.
i saw tre's hula'ing down the track before... that thing loses so much doing that, it's incredible.
sorry to get so far off topic bz, the boat looks bitchin'.. it'll be a blast to drive!

BZ owns Tre's boat too now. He is beginning to corner the market on ford powered Southwinds.
KC, We had a great time with you and Evelyn this weekend. Chenyl has some pix that she wanted to send to you too. We missed you on Sunday. Where did you go.

I had asked Tre if in fact you were going to go back out on Sunday, maybe he misunderstood me, it was my understanding you were going to leave Sunday morning.
Regardless, we had a great time, the slow ride up river and back was very relaxing indeed and to top the weekend off Evelyn hit a jackpot at the casino on the way out of town yeeee-haw!!!
Were kind of split on a Memorial day run, if we don't make the big weekend then we will hit it the following weekend and test the Southwind (providing it makes it out under it's own power) Out.
Thanks for the good times and great company.

He was on the fence a little and we convinced him to go out. I can't see going out for one day on the water. We need to change the plugs in the old tooner. I think it will gain 2-3 mph.

Hello RRK,
Thank you for the nice compliments.
We typically stay at the Marriott in Yuma.
I am not sure if were going to go Memorial or not, I guess I should make up my mind here pretty quick to reserve a room.
Take care and have a terrific weekend...KC
