LOS ANGELES - Both sides of the 710 Freeway are closed at Firestone Boulevard Wednesday as an LAPD swat team engages in a standoff with a motorist in a minivan. Images
Los Angeles police chased the driver, a kidnapping suspect, from Long Beach to the South Gate area, north of Imperial Highway. The minivan he was driving stopped on the northbound Long Beach (710) Freeway and a standoff began at about 10:30 a.m., under the Firestone Boulevard overpass.
Long Beach police began the chase with an undercover unit, according to the LAPD.
The minivan is sandwiched between two armored SWAT vehicles.
Police said the man is wanted in connection with a kidnapping in December 2005.
The backup on the 710 Freeway extends north from Firestone to the 5 Freeway. Northbound traffic is backed up from Firestone to beyond 105 Freeway.

Thats what I was wondering. They are just showing footage of him pinned in by swat vehicles.
Did he try to run? What was the reason to incorporate such large amounts of force?

Oh not in LA. They usually jump out and run across a few lanes of opposing traffic and if not a front grill ornament they get tackled running down the embankment.
Drugs make Supermen out of mere mortals daily.

Suspect In Freeway Standoff Surrenders
By Richard Winton, Times Staff Writer
March 8, 2006, 3:01 PM PST
Police hunted down a gang member wanted for kidnapping, stopping and surrounding him on one of Los Angeles' busy freeways this afternoon.
The standoff with the suspect, which closed the 710 Freeway, ended after four hours.
The man, Eduardo Medina, 33, allegedly tried to kidnap the daughter of a Van Nuys restaurateur last year for ransom, Lt. Paul Vernon of the Los Angeles Police Department said.
Vernon called Medina a known gang member who is considered armed and dangerous. He is now in custody of the Los Angeles County sheriff's department.
Police did not identify the victim of the kidnapping, which occurred in December. On Dec. 10, an accomplice of Medina was caught as he attempted to collect the ransom, Vernon said. Medina managed to escape the scene in South Los Angeles.
The hostage was freed uninjured, Vernon said.
Medina has been sought ever since. LAPD officers located him this morning in the 1000 block of East Market Street in Long Beach, but he fled, Vernon said.
Police chased Medina from Long Beach to Bell, then closed in on the suspect's minivan on the 710 Freeway, shutting down traffic in both directions on the heavily traveled road.
Heavily-armored police vehicles known as "bears" blocked the suspect's van at the front and rear. The van was severely damaged from a front-end impact.
With news helicopters circling, local and national television broadcast the incident live. At least two Internet sites showed it continuously.
With the afternoon rush hour approaching, the standoff continued. About 1:30 p.m., a third armored vehicle closed in from the driver's side of the van, but failed to break the impasse.
Caltrans had to close a 1½-mile stretch of the freeway southbound at Florence Avenue and northbound at Firestone Boulevard, said spokesman Dave White. The road carries 215,000 vehicles a day.

One bullet and a good shot, case closed... :220v:
I agree, thousands of people's day was ruined, millions of dollars in lost business, possibly lives put in jeopardy (medical organs not delivered, blood etc), countless deliverys not delivered, doctor appts missed, kids left stranded, the list is endless. Bottom line a huge cost to thousands of people over a kidnapper scumbag.
It should have gone like this:
Cop on bullhorn:
"Sir put your hands in plain sight and exit the vehicle."
If said sir doesn't exit vehicle sniper takes aim.
Cops break window. Sir jackass hoodlum kidnapper scumbag has one more choice to exit the vehicle or go for a weapon and get splattered like a ripe tomatohead.
Either way end of story. About a half hour on my watch. Freeway open in under an hour tops.
But of course my method would never fly in litigeous PC-afornia.
