I took out my boat for the first time yesterday after rebuilding my Berkeley JC pump and today I noticed a waxy substance that has seeped out of my packing and run down the side of the suction piece. Is this normal after the first run?

mine did that to , don't know if that is normal but it seams to have stoped.

You probably had them a little too tight for the first outing and melted them down a little bit. Probably no real damage. Run them for a while that way and see if they leak any at 3000 rpm. If so tighten just a little more and that will more than likely take care of them.

Try getting the solid White Teflon packing if you can..
We get it from a local Bearing Dealer ...it is usually sold by the pound or foot and cut it to the size you need ...take old packing with you and they will match it up.
I beleive it is square 3/8" ???
