I'm a first time buyer and really know nothing about boats. I really like the Cat designs and interested in anything from a 25ft to 28ft open bow or party deck, Even close bow if it makes sense. I Want to run a 496HO. There so much out there to choose from, I don't want to just consider the popular names like Magic,Eliminator,Cobra. I'm looking for new and have a budget of around 60k to 85k. Thank you so much for any feedback. See you on the water, Hopefully.

It's a really good time to buy a boat . financing is very low, selection is good because of the low demand and prices are low.there probably couldn't be a better time to buy a boat . Normally I would wait until the offseason , but I don't think it matters.

It would definitely be worth your while to go to the International Sail and Power Boat Show, October 2-5 at Long Beach Convention Center and Shoreline Village Marina. There's going to be some VERY motivated manufacturers and dealers at that show. If you're ready to purchase, they are ready to sell! For boats you're interested in, exhibitors will include: Advantage, Hallett, Essex, Laser, Magic, Sleekcraft and perhaps Eliminator. Go to www.internationalsailandpowerboatshow.com for more info.

If your not looking for speed records, and you won't reach one w/ 496 anyway, get a 25ish Vee w/ mid cabin. They have much more room than a cat. Deck's are nice to, but most don't have a cabin to get out of the sun. My 25 Nordic is a great example. There probably is better boats, but certainly not for the $$$.
Just my 2 cents.
Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but mine is the only one that counts.

Buy a less expensive boat and learn how to use it before you plunk down $85,000 on something you don't know how to drive.
the used market has a lot of bargains now, you can pick up a smokin deal.
that way you can learn how to run the craft without crashing into the dock and breaking your new pride and joy....or anyone elses! You can figure out what you like doing, whether is rafting up, going fast, skiing, fishing, whatever, THEN buy the right boat.
Plus there are already enough yahoos out there now with big expensive boats who have no clue what they are doing.

I think 2 cents is on the mark, but I wouldn't wait till the boat show. Right now is the time to buy! Everybody is making deals now before the next show. Pick up the boat trader and look for a builder or used boat from a manufacturer that will be in business in a couple of years. I hate to say it but some may not make it till 09' and you want to be able to sell your boat if something unforseen happens. Eliminator, Nordic, Advantage, are probably safe bets.

Call Kachina in Phoenix. I have had a nice 30 for several years and they recently came out with a thirty foot deck that I saw last week. Very nice. The prices are really sharp and with a 496 you`ll be happy. Of course you can put 900 IN IT AND FLY IF THAT`S WHAT YOU WANT.

I wouldn't consider any boat larger than 24ft if all your gonna run is a 496. I'd look at the Hallet 240, open or closed. If your on Havasu get at least a 24 with trim tabs and make sure you take a boaters safety course. Buy used there are killer deals to be had out there, if $$$ is no issue than look at the new Hallett 255, Eliminator 25 Daytona or Ultra 26 Shadow but go with the 525, you won't regret that.
Good Luck!!

1. Buy a boat that has a solid reputation over time. This will help when you go to resell.
2. I would go with conservative colors on the used boat.
3. Stock engine
4. At least 24ft
5. Open Bow

Do yourself (and us) a huge favor and take a boat safety class before you hit the water. I agree with Rich about buying yourself a smaller, less expensive starter boat, get experience and then buy your dream boat. Just my .02.

Mabey look at a Laveycraft. They have a cat, 27' sabre, that will go over 70mph with a 495 HO in it.
