Should the rocker arm roll across the top of the valve stim or should it stay in the center and be as norrow as posible?.

The pattern should be centered on the valve tip, maybe slightly toward the valley of the engine and cover about 1/4th to 1/3rd of the tip. Once it has been run you can tell if the valves have been floated,(not enough spring pressure), because the valve tip will show multiple patterns. TIMINATOR

It should start just to the inside of the valve roll across to the center of the valve at mid lift and back to the inside section of the valve. At exactly mid lift the valve should be exactly perpendicular to the rocker. I.E. Center of trunion in line with center of roller perpendicular to the valve. Not sure if that made sense??

There's a great thread about this over at
performance boats in the dyno tech section

Did you go from 'flat tappet to roller'?
