Although the media sometimes likes to dwell on the not-so-safe aspects of recreational boating, the statistics don't lie. In 2007, national recreational boating fatalities dropped to 685 from 710 in 2006. And if you compare that number with 1997 when it was 821 fatalities, I'd have to say that boaters are doing a pretty good job of keeping the waterways reasonably safe. On the flip-side, motorcycle deaths were up about 6 percent in 2007 compared to 2006. And in case anyone is wondering, there are nearly 13 million registered boats in the U.S.

odds would say that with less boaters around, you would have less incidents...

The safety statistics were obtained from an October 16, 2008 press release from the National Transportation Safety Board in Washington D.C. If you want more info on the subject -- contact Keith Holloway (202) 314) 6100 or hollowk@ntsb.gov -- you can also respond to ntsbpressreleases@ntsb.gov.
